Default What does Studio Canal mean to Blu-ray?

Hiya guys,

Just wondering what having Studio Canal supporting Blu-ray means for us?

I see they have connections to such films as:

Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz, Love Actually, Terminator 2

Does this mean these will be available for Blu-ray in the future, or is Studio Canal's involvement with these films something other than distribution rights?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Studio Canal is a MASSIVE powerhouse in Europe. They have one of the deepest catalogs out there.

I have no idea about Shaun or Fuzz, but I guess it all depends on whether they've released a version on video

According to amazon.fr, both Shaun and Love Actually are distributed on home video by Studio Canal, so I would imagine that there actually might be Blu-ray releases in future!!

All I need now is news their releases will be region-free!

Also as a side-note... I hope the news of Momentum Pictures releasing on Blu-ray will mean CSI I don't know how the Alliance Atlantis/Momentum thing will work..

It means wider distribution and widespread dominance in Europe. The US should see some imports that would have been unavailable otherwise.

Studio Canal is a major studio that creates films and a distributor of Hollywood movies in France and some other European countries. In those countries it meant that people could not get some movies available on BD except through import. I think they were a major force in keeping HD DVD alive in some countries in Europe. I think this change will end up making HD DVD much less tempting there. For people in other countries it could mean we can import BDs of some titles that are HD DVD only

I was looking at HD DVDs in HMV today to see which were Studio Canal titles. There may be more than this, but the following titles at least are currently HD DVD exclusive in the UK, released by Studio Canal:
Basic Instinct
Total Recall
Terminator 2
Rambo First Blood
Rambo First Blood Part II

Don't think so. Most distributors (even Sony) only uses Region AB and C (region free) on all their releases in Europe. All neutral studios have only released region free discs so far in both Europe and US. Studio Canal will be both releasing in Europe and be a neutral distributor. Everything talks for region free discs from Studio Canal!

I think it will depend on the age of the title. I don't know if it is a Sony or a BD thing but PG had said at some point that a RC is only for the first year of a new release. And this is mostly there to protect the theatrical releases. Because a movie can end up on disk even before it reached theatres in other regions.
