Default SAMSUNG BD-P1400 will be selling for around $398 at some discount Inernet companies

From a reliable source the Samsung BD-P1400 will be selling for around $398 at some discount Internet mail order companies about a month after launch. The player should be in retail stores in September for around $499.99 as long as it does not get delayed.

I knew about the $499.99 retail price, but you pretty much have to assume that within a few months of the launch they will be available on Amazon and other sites for about $50 to $100 less. By Christmas, maybe it'll sell for $375 or even less.

Up until 2 months ago, so did I. I loved having some inside info on product releases. That's about the only thing I liked about working there in my 8 years. Well that, and the employee discount.

Who cares? It's not even profile 1.1 compliant. Put it in the garbage and try again.

Do you have a link for that?

I have read the German press releases for BD-UP5000 and BD-P1400.
http://presse.samsung.de/press_pressemappe_ifa_2007.asp

They clearly state that BD-UP5000 is profile 1.0 Blu-ray player, but they don't state the profile for BD-P1400...

According to the latest specs from Samsung the BD-P1400 hardware only supports BD Profile 1.0 and the Network jack can only be used for software updates. The player does not have the minimum hardware requirements for PIP (profile 1.1) or BD-LIVE (profile 2.0).
http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/detail/spec.do?group=mp3audiovideo&type=blu_ray&subtype=b lu_raydiscplayers&model_cd=BD-P1400/XAA

The Samsung BD-P1400 is going to have a very short life of 2 months or less. The BLU-RAY association has mandated that all BLU-RAY players manufactured after October 31st 2007 are required to have 256 MB of memory storage for PIP and also all BLU-RAY players that include an optional internet connection is required to have 1GB of memory storage for BD-live. Samsung most likely will be very busy manufacturing several thousands of the BD-P1400 before the October 31st cut off date.

The estimated time of arrival on the Samsung BD-P2400 and BD-UP5000 is November. The BD-UP5000 has the exact same features of the BD-P2400 with the added bonus of playing HD-DVD discs at 1080P/24.
The BD-P2400 is mandated by the BDA to have the minimum hardware requirements to support both PIP (profile 1.1) and BD-LIVE (profile 2.0). Technically since the BD-UP5000 is a universal player in theory it is not covered by the October 31st mandate. My understanding is the BD-UP5000 is Samsungs flagship top of the line HDTV player and it will have all the features of the BD-P2400 plus HD-DVD disc support.

Here are some Samsung spec sheets that have just been released

So, ultimately what will be the price difference between the BD-P1400 and the BD-P2400? Is it $50 or $100?

The difference in price will be $100. For those that can afford the extra $100 and can wait 2 months the BD-P2400 is a better choice compared to the BD-P1400.

I have some comments on your conclusions...

First, the link you provides states BD-P1400 as a profile 1 (=1.0?). That is not a proof that it does not fulfill the hardware requirement of profile 1.1 or 2.0. It might be possible to upgrade with firmware upgrade.

In the product data sheet it says "Ethernet Port - Perfect and convenient for any upgrades that may need to be issued in the future as the Blu-ray format continues to evolve.". What Blu-ray evolutions could that be...?

BDA has mandated all Blu-ray players launched after October 31st 2007 to be either profile 1.1 or 2.0. Samsung is allowed to continue to manufacture BD-P1400 after Oct. 31st. Also, the requirement is that profile 2.0 players must have an internet connection, not the other way around. It's for example perfectly ok for a profile 1.1 player to have a internet connection for firmware upgrades.

I think most everyone knows that profile 2.0 has to do with BD Live and not the ability to do firmware updates.

By the way, an extra $100 for the updated specs 1.1 and 2.0 and the inclusion of the HQV chip is not a bad deal indeed. And it is worth the extra wait.

Probably, but I still wanted to point out that it's ok for a profile 1.1 player to do firmware updating by an internet connection.

The Blu-ray Disc Assn. has mandated that all hardware streeting after that date must be able to play back picture-in-picture video, as driven by BD Java interactive technology. Many players on shelves now can handle BD Java, but to varying degrees. Few Blu-ray players include picture-in-picture capability, for instance, not even the PlayStation 3.
Sony’s current and summer 2007 stand-alone models and available Pioneer and Philips units are among those lacking the picture-in-picture feature.”
Quote
“Additionally, after Oct. 31, all Blu-ray players must hold a minimum 256MB of persistent memory storage, which will help power the picture-in-picture feature. Also, any Blu-ray player that features an Internet connection is required to have 1GB of such memory, in order to hold whatever content users decide to download from the Web.”
http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6427147.html?nid=2840
This entire topic can be confusing. According to the above quote all Blu-ray players released after Oct 31st must hold a minimum of 256MB of memory for PIP (profile 1.1) and all BLU-RAY players that feature an optional internet connection are required to have a min of 1GB of memory for BD-LIVE (profile 2.0). My understanding is after October 31st all BLU-RAY players launching will at the very minimum be profile 1.1 and all BLU-RAY players launching after October 31st 2007 that contain the optional Ethernet jack will support profile 2.0. Now if there is a loophole in the mandate that allows manufactories to continue manufacturing existing players that do not meet the minimum hardware to support the profile 1.1 and 2.0 standard after Ocotber 31st then that is new news to me. What good is a mandate if it allows manufactories to continue to make existing BLU-RAY players that only support profile 1.0 for as many years or months as they want?

I'm sorry, but I wouldn't trust Susanne Ault on this.

Wikipedia is not guaranteed to be correct either, but its information on profiles is very consistent with other sources I have seen.

"Compliance with this profile will be mandatory for player models introduced to the market after October 31, 2007,[1] but existing products will be unaffected. "

"2.0 (BD-Live), also known as BD-Live, adds network connectivity to the list of mandatory functions..." (There is no requirement on network connectivity for profile 1.1.)
