i just dont understand people at all if they want to know what the deal is about going to a hdtv and hd movies of either blu-ray or hd-dvd why dont they just research it then buy the hdtv and whatever kind of hd player they will go with? or ask someone who knows a good amount of info on high definition programming?

American is getting dumber - that's a shocker! Who did they talk to - kids that were just born? People that have been boarded up their entire life? Or is it people are really that stupid?

No, but really - BestBuy INFORMING people? Give me a break. They are the ones that are confusing the poor people to start with.

Some American's have higher priorities like kids, bills, football scores, politics, the list goes on and on. A high def format might be on the bottom of THEIR lists. That is why they don't know anything or are confused. If they want the information they will eventually get it. I still remember people being confused when DVD first came out, and wonder how to rewind the disc. Give them a break. America is a free market, capitalist country, but the population is specialized to know a lot about a few things.

sheez there's alot of dumbasses out there. confusing upconversion with actual HD source is understandable (for my grandma), but who the hell is stupid enough to think they don't need rear speakers for rear sound? these are the same people who phone up dell's support line during a blackout and say "my computer won't turn on!".

That is a good point. Everyone has there own little world/bubble. Hell, I have even found that out for myself. Strange and weird at the same time.

My wife actually said when she worked at Dell there was a big joke going around about one customer that called saying his "coffee holder broke" on his computer. The engineers really get a big kick out of those people.

Some people are just hopeless. It took me forever to get my mother to understand what a mouse is and how to use it (that was 5 years ago).

Should anyone be surprised? I mean, after all we have shows on TV like, Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader? For the most part, most people don't seem to be.

It's all in what you are interested in and how much money you have.

I've learned to survive in this world by doing alot of research prior to buying something out of necessity. I don't want to overpay and I want to get the best quality and value for the money.

Other folks....I work with some....simply make too much or don't care....they just buy what appeals to them at the time.

Lol. My mom used to do that for the longest time. Was annoying as hell when 4 IE windows popped up and before that, having 4 browser windows trying to open sucked down resources.

Working in the field, I still have people who refer to the PC as the "hard drive". Or when I tell them to turn off the computer, they turn off the monitor. They still don't know what right click or left click is. So on so forth.

The worst part of that are the people who are so stubborn that after it's pointed out they refuse to change it because they don't want to lose face

I have to agree. It really comes down to your interests and I think for most people (right now) HD isn't that high on their list.

I agree its not that americans are becoming dumber, its just that we're becoming highly specialized. I am sure that many people here are specialists in on field or another. Now if you are, think about the other specialist jobs that you have absolutely no idea about, like heart surgeon, bio-chemist, computer programmer, financial engineer, construction engineer, econometrician, Navy seal, dog whisperer, cook(certainly not me), etc...

I remember my brother in law, who's a lung specialist, asking me once what the fed funds target rate meant, at the time I had a hard time containing my disbelief of his ignorance.

Of course that there are also U.S. Americans who just plain dumb

I'm not surprised. I've heard customers ask for a "blu-ray lcd" or "blu-ray dvd". I also don't think Americans really care about high-definition for the most part. There are millions still not ready for the 2009 over-the-air ntsc switchoff. Many of those also are content with their SD cable/satellite programming. One of the top sites online is the garbage-definition youtube. And the top selling video game systems are the lower graphic Wii and DS.
