Default Onkyo - Very Odd Problem

I am having a very odd problem every now and then with an Onkyo receiver. We got it new, this year a month or so after Christmas at Circuit City.

Anyways, when I switch to On Demand from Comcast - and then go to start a movie/show from On Demand - the receiver POPS really loud. So loud it scares the shit out of you and it seems to do it at MAX volume. It lasts for literally 1 second and the receiver cuts off and the power light blinks until I turn it back on.

I am not sure what causes this and it has happened about 4/6 times since I have owned it. I happens every so often but no patters or anything that would make me think something on cable is causing it.

Scares the dogs to death and makes everyone in the house jump. Its freaky.

Any ideas? My guess is something isn't switching over right and it dies.

Lol. Its true. Imagine the scariest movie you ever seen and that one part that you did not see coming that makes you jump because you were scared shitless. Pretty much the same thing here. Its very unexpected. One of dogs started shaking. He doesn't like thunderstorms either so it can be expected.

Still scary.

Could the comcast receiver cause this perhaps? Have you tried getting an upgraded receiver from comcast?

These are pretty much "new" receivers from Comcast. I was going to say the one that was hooked up died because well, I sweated and it dripped down inside and did something to it. Would not show anything for video anymore. Just sound.

Anyways, I put in a new receiver and realized this one did it too.

It only pops when switching between input sources. I.e. when I switch from DVD to my PS3 ... It occasionally pops as well when my receiver is on, tuned into my PS3 (which is off) and I turn the PS3 on.

From the various threads on AVS I read this appears to be common and on Onkyo's website I remember reading somewhere this may occur and that this is NOT indicative of a faulty unit.

It really doesn't bother me a whole lot. As I said, I've really only had it when switching input sources. When I am playing a BD I never had any popping. Not even when the BD switches between sound modes.

I know the 805 has a lot of advanced settings that can be tuned and I really haven't played with those yet. I basically ran through the audessy setup and left it at that.

In addition, the 805 has a RS232 port on the back. I am hoping it's there to allow for firmware upgrades, so perhaps they'll release an update sometime in the near future to address this issue.

I wouldn't trade my Onkyo for anything in the world. It kicks ass.

Default onkyo popping noise

I own the Onkyo 805 and I just contacted Onkyo about the popping issue here is what they had to say...
Is it a clicking noise or a popping noise? Do get this noise through the receiver or the speakers? If it's through the receiver then that is normal for the receiver click when changing the listening mode or turning the receiver on and off. No, the clicking noise through the receiver will not damage the receiver. It's normal. However, if it's through the speakers you may need to bring the unit into an authorized service center with a copy of your receipt. To locate an authorized service center you can log onto our website (ONKYOUSA.COM). However, if you are still in the 30 day (some dealers are 14 days) return/exchange warranty then you can just exchange the receiver form the dealer you purchased it from.

Thank You
Quashon

Again, thank you for contacting Onkyo USA Product Support, if you need further assistance feel free to call us at 800-229-1687 or visit our website ONKYOUSA.COM for product, catalogues, hookup diagrams, authorized dealer/service center locations, sales of new/refurbished products and
warranty information.

First off you shouldn't be buying Onkyo equipment, they support hddvd. One of the few that do. Best advise is to take it back and pick up brand that supports the dominate format of Blu-Ray. That should clear up your AV headaches.

If the pop is so loud it could probably damage your speakers and/or your hearing.. handle with care

Well, Onkyo is the best and most affordable AV system I can get. So, as for them being HD-DVD - this was bought before and it does not support HD-DVD in any ways.
