Default Can Bluray Do This N That

Their are no Bluray machines or HD machines available in the UK at the moment, so can anyone tell me if Bluray will play your standard DVD,upscale them and throwin multi region as well. We in the UK like our multi region as it gives us the chance to get some early US releases,a few months in fact before they go on general release.

Their is very little talk at the moment regarding Bluray so if anyone over in the good ol US of A can help out, well thanks.

Ya'all come back soon.ya hear.

No Blu-ray players here in the US yet either. However the advertising available indicates the players will upscale current DVDs (to 1080p). No indication on multi-region. However, I would suspect that players made by any major manufacturer will respect DVD region coding.

As I'm understanding it currently, and please correct me if I'm wrong, in regards to audio:

NONE of the first generation Blu-Ray players will have decoding or processing for the new HD sound fields from Dolby and DTS, is that correct?

Because I was wondering what/how people were going to get along if their receivers didn't have HDMI connections and so forth?

I don't believe this is correct. What the first generation Blu-ray players will be incapable of is exporting the new types of digital streams without conversion. Processing and decoding of Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital TrueHD, and DTS-HD will be done in the the Blu-ray player itself.

Please see my post https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=1570 for more info.
