Default Audio for EA games

I have a PS3 hooked up to my TV via hdmi and to my receiver via an optical cable. I have no problem playing games unless they're made by EA (Madden 08, Tiger Woods, etc..). The video output is fine, but I can't hear any sound. The PS3 logo and sound that play before every game sound fine, but as soon as the EA logo screen appears, I dont get audio. I have an older Aiwa receiver that does not support DTS HD, could this be the problem?

do you have your optical set on bitstream?

Many older recievers can't handle 640kbps DD. Maybe that's the problem
