So, is Toshiba really outselling Sony when it comes to stand-alone players?

I think both are citing correct data, just different time frames.

But of course these stats don't count the PS3, which is a major competitor with Blu-Ray standalones.

The BDA claimed that BD players have been outselling HD DVD players for the past 12 weeks.

Toshiba responded that HD DVD players have sold more than BD this year.

Based on the fact that Toshiba and/or the HD DVD group was claiming 60% market share a few months ago, then later claimed 70% (although I think that was just for one window of time even though Ken Graffeo worded it in a way that left it open to interpretation as SI), I would say that now claiming 55% to 42% YTD makes it fairly likely that there has been a window recently where Blu-ray players outsold HD DVD players. The Amazon sale last week could have turned things back HD DVD's way if they weren't already though.

We may see these companies making the same kinds of claims with respect to software sales except in exactly the opposite direction (Toshiba using recent numbers and Sony using YTD or SI) if HD DVD wins this week or an upcoming week by Nielsen count.

I would think that HD DVD would need to win 12 weeks in a row before the equivalent situation hits.

But, yes, I'm already prepared to read the press release should HD DVD have won last week's Nielsen.

The BDA did NOT claim anything! They commented on a NPD Group research which was covered by Video Business as well.

It doesn't really matter who leads in sales or who lied. The fact is that if BD stand alone sales are even just 90% of HD-DVD along with another 150K PS3 per month. HD-DVD is sunk.

This is corporate spin doctors at their best lol. Sony stated a fact that BD players are outselling HD DVD players in the last 12 weeks, which is true. Then Toshiba. instead of challenging the claim, basically just made another statement about the YTD sales, which is also true. I just find this humorous and silly on Toshiba's side. Im sorry the only people they are going to fool is the diehard hd dvd fans.

IMO Toshiba would have been better off if they didnt make a comment or change the subject to the 3rd gen player only. Instead, they basically said 'yeah sales are down, Sony's right, and here's more misdirection to avoid embarassment.' Im sorry but any consumer with half a brain will see right through that and choose to back the winning side.
