Here's the deal with this. Just got a new Toshiba 1080p LCD (40RV525U) and so I went to hook up my PS3 to it. I did the video reset thing, and it correctly detected it as 1080p, so I accepted, and loaded to the XMB, and noticed it flickers this white "snow" on the bottom half, or top half of the screen. It never flickers the entire screen.
So I figured it was a bad connection, and reconnected it, same thing. Switched to a different HDMI port, same thing. Switched to the 3rd port, same thing. So now I thought it was the cable and I switched it out with the one I used with my HTPC, same thing. Now my HTPC is at 1080p but doesn't flicker at all, so still thinking it's a cable, I borrow a 6ft HDMI cable my buddy just got from monoprice, same deal. Now this is when I change the resolution, at 720p it's fine. Completely no flicker, so then I go back to 1080p, flicker comes back. Then just for s**** and giggles, I fire up a bluray at 1080p, absolutely no flicker at all. None. So I try a 720p movie thats on my hard drive, flickers through the entire thing. So I bring it back to my PC monitor it was on before, and there is no flicker at all using the same cables I am trying on the TV. So I have no idea what's going on. Summary: PS3 (60GB) flickers in the XMB and hard drive based contect at 1080p, but never during bluray based, including movies and games. Setup: PS3 via HDMI directly into the new TV, no AVR. Do you guys think it's still a bad cord? Or maybe the PS3 is bad, or the hard drive itself is bad? I'm really at wit's end here. |

I'd say it's your PS3. It's probably not the cable as you've tried more than one. It doesn't occur on all 1080p sources (blu-ray is ok) so thus it's not hte TV or the TV input. That leaves the PS3. I'm guessing something's wrong with the output when it's not reading a disc. If you have a game, try that and see if there's a flicker and then call Sony.

The thing that is making me crazy is that my laptop and HTPC both work at 1080p with no issue. And the PS3 works(ed) with my friend's Sammy 1080p before he got his own and on my 24 inch monitor, so I have asked my friend to come over with his PS3 to make sure another PS3 does or doesn't do the same thing.

Not familiar with the Toshiba but my Samsung has a few screen modes. With Just Scan, I get some white or green lines with some TV shows. If I switch it to 16:9 mode, it turns on the overscan and I get no more lines. See if the Toshiba has any settings to turn on overscan. This may fix what you are experiencing.

Well my friends 40GB PS3 worked perfectly fine, so curiously we took mine to his house again, and mine worked perfectly fine there, same HDMI cable I've been using. Also, we found out that running a game from the hard drive also did not yield a flicker, so it's only the XMB, movies from hard drive, and music from hard drive @ 1080p that's a problem.
Is it possible for my one PS3 just not "like" the tv? This seems quite baffling to me. |

I am having the same exact problem with my Toshiba 1080p LCD (40RV525U) that I just bought a couple of weeks ago. I also have the 60gb ps3. At least I can still watch 1080p blu-ray's, but it is annoying having to turn 1080p on and off.
Any luck contacting Sony? Toshiba? |

I called Toshiba, they said it was the low quality cable, so I bought a Monster cable for shits, and it didn't work, so I borrowed some more PS3's, 3 to be exact. Both 40GB I tried did not flicker, but the 2 60GB (one being mine) and the 1 80GB did flicker. This seems to be a weird TV and PS3 glitch at the same time? It's odd for sure.

I talked to a Toshiba rep who said he had heard of the problem and I just needed to switch the TV out until I got one that worked. First time it worked. So this is a confirmed TV problem on that model.

I'm having exactly the same problem with my Samsung LA40A610 but I did not have additional PS3s to try out. I've gotten a new HDMI cable, updated PS3 fireware to 2.53 and it's still the same.
I'll contact Samsung for support next week. Weird...... |

Hah... now this is getting even weirder, I realized I have HDMI port4 at the side of the panel (port 1,2 and 3 at the back of the panel didn't work) and by trying my luck I plugged it in and everything works just absolutely fine, movie and game even the XMB....
![]() Can somebody explain this? |

Well, i'll update this thread when Samsung decided to look into my problem. For the time being, i'll just keep my fingers crossed hoping that port will be fine.

I know this is a really old thread but I recently got a 58" plasma and I have little digital snow for a few seconds when on the XMB then it clears up then goes back. This just keeps happening. Only seems to happen on the XMB. Wondered if anyone figured this out. Using PS3 slim. Thanks.

I had the same problem connecting my PS3 to my 47" LG LED SL90 1080P TV
PS3 set to output in 1080 TV input using HDMI 1,2,3 result in lower quality picture in the xmb menu but the picture is fine when playing a game or watching a Blu-Ray. Changed cables and used a monster cable to make sure the connections were okay and nothing, same issue... Tried omy HDMI 4 input on the side ofy tv and there was no problems at all!! Confused as to why this is... Perhaps the inputs on the back of the TV are not capable of handling a 1080P source? Not really sure, kind of annoying for connecting multiple devices with 1080 sources.... |
