Why is it that so many people loathe, despise and generally hate Sony so much? They say they are greedy and force things down people's throat at too high of a cost and make so many mistakes.
Where does all this stem from? |

Sony pricing is always more exp than the next brand as they try to put in all the creme of the crop technology and special features into their product which push up the pricing. unfortunately, most consumers are only looking at the basic stuff, for example, dvd player. my x brand player can play dvd fine, why should i spend more for sony player ?
bcos the dsp used for sony player is better than the x brand, if you compare the pq of both player, you can realise that. Last edited by lch; 08-27-2007 at 04:28 AM. |

Is there such a thing a corporation that ISN'T Greedy
I think Sony's pretty much top of the line- you pay for it- but it's nice when you can afford it- at least you know you're getting quality! There are too many companies that build up a good repuatation and then cheap out and lower the quality and pretty much coast through on a good reputation even though all they've ended making is crap (RCA?) Sony could EASILY do that- but they keep their integrity intact |

Sony had a subsidiary push out a rootkit.
They had some batteries explode too. Of all things though it seems like it's lame to keep holding it against them. It's not like they put out defective equipment that burned down houses like a certain other gaming/software company did. |

This is basic psychology. Given any large entity like Sony, a certain percentage of people will hate them.
This is why more people hate Microsoft than any other company in the world. They impact (and disrupt) the lives of more people than anyone else. |

A company produces something new, and we go and buy it because it makes our lives better in some way, like Microsoft with its killer PC apps during the 80's. Or at least we are made to think we need it, thanks to potent advertising. Much of what we buy is junk however: tasty treets like soda with little or no nutritional value, or colorful eye candy made from plastic thats last for a year or two.
Time goes by, entrophy sets in, and the world around the company changes. Instead of innovation, the large market share they gained begins to confine them as they try to stay in business. It hinders new ways of doing things. That's when we on the outside begin to dislike big companies. They are now in the way. As long as this does not happen to SONY, Blu is good to go. A good example is the "Rise, Decline and Rebirth of Ford". "Starting with nothing in 1905", it had by 1920, a billion+ in cash, but "by 1927 this seemingly impregnable business empire was in shambles." - Peter F. Drucker. The early success of the model T bacame its failure later on. 2010: It is interesting to see the systemic problems the Auto industry is having as they struggle with the recession. Fordism, the system of mass production and consumption to produce economic growth is in trouble if energy supplies become tight. Indeed, the whole notion of borrowing aginst future growth is thrown out of wack as we think we can continue on a path of exponetial growth in a finite world. Sony creates proprietary hardware that they try to set as an industry standard to garner royalties. Betamax, Minidisc, UMD, Blu-ray. Sony used to set a standard in electronics but during the mid to late 90's, they relied on their name and not their quality to sell their products. Fortunately, things have turned around over the last several years and Sony is again towards the top in high quality/high value.
And like it's been mentioned, anyone who dominates an industry has a marker on their head. Does Sony do no wrong? Absolutely not. Many people are also lashing out because the PS3 is priced out of their range. They want the system, they want the games that are coming but some don't feel that blu-ray is necessary for their gaming. Sony sees differently. This is why some people talk about Sony 'shoving blu-ray down people's throats'. Last edited by FilmmakingFiasco; 08-27-2007 at 05:01 AM. |

I think the reason you don't hear about the other countries batteries is that the other countries don't have the consumer protection that we do in the US. I know about this first hand living in Kuwait. Toyota makes a SUV called the Fortuner, Great vehicle but if you think about going around a corner fast it will roll. The company I work for provides them for us and my wife rolled one going about 40 mph. You can't get them in the states and I am sure you never will be able to because of the liability issues, but there are thousands of them here and in the Philippines.

my personal opinio is people should hate MS and toshiba for being the evil corp. and paramount as the greedy corp. that sums it up. i also think people hate sony because they know that BD is better and the majority of them are 360 owners, and can't afford a ps3, since they are wasting their money on HDDVD, and consoles that keep failing.

I love Sony, always have and I think I always will. They are a company I have always trusted, their products rarely fail and if they do their tech support is amazing.
Reason why people might not like Sony is because their products cost a bit more than the competition. For example, the 40"XBR-series Bravia LCD may cost about $400 more than the 40" 1080P Sharp, and about $150 more than its Samsung rival (also great brands), but are you getting the XBRITE LCD, which is brighter and will last longer? I don't think so. Sometimes sales people are also to blame, because they are somewhat biased and tell customers Sony is over priced cause they want the consumer to buy an other brand (specially commission based stores), cause most brands pay more commission than Sony and there are 2 companies (1 is mainly an LCD company with nice black shiny and slim frames on their TVs, the other is mainly a projection/Plasma company that also makes cars, can't say who though, lol. They are good companies too though) out there that offer great rewards for sales people. The other thing is that certain consumer magazines sway people from Sony simply cause they feel the items are over priced. ...anyways, Sony is a great brand in my opinion, but for those that do not like Sony be sure to stick with Samsung, Sharp, Panasonic or others known names. |

"Sony hating" is an Internet meme. It sucks, but there you have it.
It'll die off like all Internet fads sooner or later (Sony really needs to pick up the pace on the PS3, though... seriously). I personally like Sony's willingness to push the envelope. They don't always make the right moves, but they try harder than any other CE company to bring new technologies to market, and for that they get my respect (and sometimes my purchasing dollars). |

Personal experience. I hate Sony. They are too large of a company and don't really care if you have a problem with them.
Me: "I'll never buy your products again." Them: "...and your point would be?" There's always another who is in love to take up the slack. Wait until they have a problem. They can then say "personal experience". |

Why do people hate Sony? (1) rootkit, (2) price of PS3, (3) rootkit, (4) personal experience with Sony product breaking down, (5) rootkit, (6) Sony's history of creating unnecessary formats (i.e. memorystick & ATRAC), (7) have I mentioned rootkit yet?
Not my reasons, just the common ones that are out there. Did rootkit get mentioned above? Although there was a study done some time ago that found Sony is still the most trusted brand name among consumers, it'd be a long time for me to try and locate the document.
