Default Correct HDMI cable for PS3

I just received my PS3 from Amazon and will be connecting it to a Sony 52inch xbr4 when it arrives in two weeks. A friend of mine said that he had problems receiving a signal from his HDMI cable (Monster Cable I believe) to his xbr3 and that he had to get one specifically made for the PS3.

Is there any reason why one HDMI cable would not carry the signal from the PS3 to an hdtv and not any other HDMI cable?

I also have Monster cable and I know most of you here hate Monster cables, but I needed the extra mesh jacket to safely run the cable through my walls and couldn't find another company that offered that.

Thanks in advance.

1. A six foot HDMI should cost $20 period. Even a guy that does HD fo a living said so on his blog.

2. Monster cable is not made to go in walls. Type "Phoenix gold hdmi" into google and see what you come up with. Out of my cable box, to a wall jack, 30 feet to my wall (phoenix gold cable), and out a wall jack into a sony bravia, and I have yet to see a loss of signal. In fact it looks freakin awesome. And Phoenix gold is not even that expensive.

The only reason a HDMI cable will not send to data to the TV is because it is not sending data at all (digital is on and off remember). This means his cables are defective and he should call Monster for the warranty or return it to the retailer. If your cables don't work you have the same option.

Monster has a really good warranty service, which is to be expected given that they overcharge (or rip off) people.

Any HDMI cable should work, 1.2 or 1.3 regardless. If you are getting picture on your TV, then your cable works at max quality. There are no degrees of quality with digital cables.

Just one more possibility may be that his PS3 was set up for component initially and wasn't switched over to HDMI when he switch cables.

I agree with the rest of the folks, monster is overpriced. A $10 to $20 no-name HDMI cable can match a monster anytime under 10-12 feet.

Cables is cables. $15 or $150 its all the same. I would stay away from the ones that you sometimes find for less than $15 simply because they won't have good quality control and testing before sales.
Check with your cable company. Comcast in Houston sells them for $15 after tax.

Monoprice.com. I put on my $5 HDMI and I didn't think I would notice a difference between my component cable and the HDMI. I was wrong. The HDMI was so much sharper during Blu-ray playback on my Sony 42A10. I even set the picture settings to duplicate the component input.

I'm very glad you brought that up. Is there any way to find out what companies are producing 1.3 compliant cables now so that I don't shoot myself in the foot by getting a 1.2?

Thanks everyone for all of the input. I appreciate the feedback without making me feel like an idiot for not knowing in the first place.

Look on the package or in the specs for the wire. It will tell which one it is.

I have never heard of a "wrong" HDMI cable. That is just crazy. All HDMI cables are the same. There is no difference (in transmission capability) from one to the other. Sounds like either your friend had a bad cable or he's pulling a joke on you.

did your friend connect to other connection previously ? if so, have to manually set it to hdmi or hold power button for 5 sec to reset.

if you so worry, get the ps3 original hdmi cable which is also rated to go 1.3 but not as expensive as the monster.

Is there really a difference between the monoprice "regular" HDMI cable ($5) and their 1.3a certified cable ($20)?

The ONLY HDMI cables supposedly NOT capable of passing 1.3 are class B... good luck trying to find one of those - if they exist. Any decent cable will pass 1.3. If the picture didn't come through it could be the panels firmware. This is CRITICAL to passing 1080p - always power up your display first, switch to the correct input, THEN power up your source. Some Early Sony displays had the HDMI input but these were not actually active believe it or not.

HDCP needs to have an ongoing conversation with the panel. Inturrupt that conversation, even to switch inputs briefly and depending on your display's EDID firmware. That firmware tells the signal from the source how many times per hour the conversation needs to happen. Early EDID firmware only gave a very short initial time for that talk. Example, if the panel couldn't 'hear' from the source within a second or two, the signal would shut itself down as protection - HDCP.
