Default Another newb

Hey folks! New guy here...

I bought a PS3 a month ago, and my TV is a Mistubishi, tho unfortunately it's only 1080i (sniff ) but regardless of interlace or progressive, these bds look gorgeous compared to sd, so I don't feel too bad about it. My question in regards to the PS3 compared to a stand-alone BD player is the firmware updates. I've seen Blu-Ray 2.0 mentioned here and there, and wonder if this is a firmware update, and if so, will PS3 be supporting it?

Nice meeting you all!

Firstly, welcome to the forums!
Most will say yes!
We believe that the PS3 should be able to be firmware upgraded to profile 1.1and eventually profile 2.0
The next update for PS3 is anticipated to be v2.0 which hopefully will have profile 1.1 on it *fingers crossed* but no official word. Since we are closing in on the oct 31 due date for profile 1.1 I would expect that if something is going to happen, it will be within the next three weeks or so! *fingers crossed again*
However, all this is speculation since nothing has been announced!

I hope when they release the update for v2.0 they just make the PS3 a Profile 2.0 player and bypass the intermediary 1.1 Profile. I think this would eliminate any future confusion.

PS3 v2.0 firmware = PS3 Profile 2.0 compatible.

It makes more sense. Any future PS3 upgrades could be 2.01, 2.02, blah blah blah...

Thanks for the welcome all. Maybe one of you could explain the whole "Profile" thing to me. What's the difference between versions and profiles?

Versions refers to the 'version' of the update that has been last released for a certain player. In terms of the PS3, we are currently on version 1.93 and anxiously awaiting version 2.0 (cause its supposed to be good).
A profile in this instance is a set of standards set down by the BDA (Blu-ray disc association) to comply with their standards.
Profile 1.1 will have PiP (and other stuff) built-in
Profile 2.0 will have...well here, click here and it will explain:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc

go the the profiles section...you'll get it easier than me trying to explain!
