Default Inquiring about new receiver.

Ok I'm thinking about upgrading my receiver. I like the one i have but just want a newer one.
I currently have the Onkyo TX-SR 805. However the remote don't work anymore and i don't know if its the remote itself or the receiver just don't recogonize it anymore. However I'm not the original owner and I fixed a few things on it.

my max spending limit is $500. however cheaper the better. Here is my list of things it has to do.

-Obviously able to decode all Blu-rays codec's.
-Able to do all the things my current reciever can do.
-looking for a receiver that has the .2 channels for sub's.
-playback of CD'S with good sound, (not often but I do occassionly play CD's)
-Prefer to stay with onkyo but not mandatory.

If there are any other things I cna't think about please let me know. Need help and don't have a lot of time to search my self.

If I were you I would try to determine whether or not the remote is bad. If you have a cheap universal remote around then try to get it working with an Onkyo code. If it turns out its the remote that went bad then keep the receiver unless you are prepared to spend in the range of $700-$1000 for a true upgrade, because frankly the TX-NR805 was overbuilt for its class and most receivers around $1000 are on par or marginally better, and that would mostly be because of they have newer features that you may or not need or want.

From a power standpoint there are few options worth exploring, because the 805 is a powerhouse. If its a problem with the receiver itself or you just decide that you want to upgrade and you want to stay with Onkyo then I have a couple of suggestions if you don't mind refurbs. If you don't need HDMI 1.4 and 3D support then THIS TX-NR3007 would be the way to go IMO. This is all of the receiver that you could ever want IMO. If you do want HDMI 1.4 and 3D support then I would suggest THIS TX-NR1008 instead.

For $500...keep your 805. Maybe think about adding a separate amp.

Another thing to ad when great options were already given . Any Receiver that as a pre-out for a Sub can have more than 1 sub you only need a Y splitter and receivers don`t " play " cd`s

I'd just like to have a receiver that has 2 preouts for the sub. I have two subs now and do the Y-splitter deal.

I meant has a good sound for the cd playback not a receiver that plays CD. geez people lol

It may be time to upgrade the speakers instead of the AVR.

If you're really dead set on upgrading your receiver and not willing to test out a universal remote to see if that works or not, I really can't suggest anything that would be better than or even equal to the 805 you have right now that would also fit within your budget.

Another thing is you really seem to have made up your mind on having a .2 receiver ... may i ask why you want that so bad instead of using a Y splitter? You will have exactly the same results with either one as the receiver is only sending a signal to the amp and is not actually powering the sub so you won't be getting any extra power from a .2 system as opposed to a .1

I completely agree with HAMP, if you are going to be spending money on your system I would strongly suggest you look into better speakers, that's probably where you'll see the biggest improvement but that's just my 2 cents

The speakers I have are barly a year n half old. just got them last february ish. i doubt they are in need of upgrades. I was just trying to fig if there was somethign better for my needs then what I gto already is all. apparantly there isn't. As far as the remote it don't work period. I have a Blue wave remote that works everything plus my PS3. But I don't have any codecs that work the receiver I tried everything I can think of.

You tried contacting Onkyo for a replacement remote? Better yet, how about a Harmony remote. Seeing as your receiver kicks @$$ if you really want to upgrade I suggest taking that $500 and getting an Emotiva or other amp.

Do you want to upgrade your receiver because of it’s age? Or are you looking to get into better audio quality?

I am looking to upgrade my Onkyo 805 also, but it has nothing to do with age or dissapointment with it. I want to move up in gear and with audio quality. I looking to get the Onkyo pre/pro 5508 and an amp(which I haven't decided on yet)

Maybe I'm missing something, but, doesn't the 805 support separate amps?

Like I said in my previous post you have quite a bit of receiver in the 805. I would not replace it unless there is something wrong with it. Now, if you can't get any universal remote to work then it could be on its way out. I would imagine other issues would start showing eventually so that would be a good reason to start looking into a new receiver.

For your budget I think the options I offered are your best bet. The 1008 will have near the power and many new features as well as a more refined sound. The 3007 will give you considerably more power as well as a lot more features and refined sound but without HDMI 1.4 like the 1008 has, but that may or may not be important to you.

Now...if there is nothing wrong with the 805 and you do get it working with another remote then DON'T replace it. It would be a total waste of money IMO. Like others have stated, you will be better off looking into upgrading your speakers. I know that you like your speakers, but honestly you can spend a grand on three fronts that will completely blow those speakers out of the water. Frankly, Sony does not make particularly good speakers. They make OK budget speakers save for their extremely high end speakers that are out of reach for the majority of us.

Do yourself a really big favor and be 100% sure that the 805 is flaking out. If it turns out that there's nothing wrong with it then keep it and start exploring options for a speaker upgrade if you really want to improve your sound. If the 805 is actually on its way out then consider the two receiver options I offered, or you can look for a local Integra dealer near you. You want to make sure that you are using your money wisely. I don't know about you, but I don't have $1000 to throw around just for the hell of it.

This is probably a dumb question but will a better receiver really improve the sound quality of my system ?

I currently own this receiver that came from a HTIB i bought from Best Buy..

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Insignia...&skuId=9931712

It decodes just about everything.....

I have added the following speakers to the set up ....I do not use the sub that came with the HTIB

Polk Audio - PSW110 10" 200 Watt Powered Subwoofer

Sony SA-WM250 100 Watt Powered Subwoofer

Polk Audio CS10 Center-Channel Speaker

I kept the 4 surround speakers it came with.............

The system sounds awesome and having 2 bass really rocks the room....This system is very loud and i have no complaints about the quality of the current set up but my question is will a better Receiver really make that much of a change to be worth it............Thanks

Also does a receiver with higher watts mean louder sound ?

The DAC in the receiver would probably make the most difference...but I say, if youre happy with what you have, stick with it. Only thing you'll do is awaken the upgraditis bug!

An upgrade in speakers would probably benefit you more.

Like others said, upgrade your speakers and hear the difference. Sell the Sonys you have to offset any loss.

Just about everything plays a roll in better audio quality, it just depends if a person wants to spend the money on that certain improvement. Such as speakers, receivers, amps, wires, and even the output device such as video player or audio player.

It may be worth it to one person, but not another. If your happy with what you have, then don’t let that bug getcha, but to answer your first question, there is always something better.

Yes watts mean more audio power and should be louder.

The quickest way of testing where the faut is, is by checking the remote with a digital camera (or a phone with a camera). Just point the remote at the camera lens and see if the light blinks on the screen of the camera. The light stays dead if the remote is faulty (99.9% of cases).
