Default HDV to AVCHD

Having problems to get a Sony Blu-ray player to play HDV files (M2T) burnt on a Sony BWU 100 burner I wonder if there is anyway one could transform HDV into AVCHD, i.e. Mpeg 2 into Mpeg 4, without loss of quality? I know that the GOP of Mpeg 2 is shorter than that of Mpeg 4 so perhaps the two formats are for always incompatible. Why are there no 3 chip AVCHD cameras? Some people would say that the compression of AVCHD is too great to allow "real HD". I´m sure the issue of HDV/AVCHD will come up more and more. Sony for one seem to favour HDV for the higher end of the market, and AVCHD for the lower. At the same time Sony so far don´t want to open the path between HDV and Blu-ray players.

You can never re-encode without loss of quality, especially when you're going lossy to lossy.

How much you lose depends on thequality of your encoder, quality of source, and how many passes you do.

well, i guess it can be done without visible loss...
i have no hd experience, but for example, mpeg2 dvd can be transform to nero avc standard definition, and theres no a single different frame... i used to backup copies of my dvds to this format since divx was not good enough for me... even in HD era today, it is still interesting choice for older movies since PS3 plays this format splendidly...
one could even say that PQ is even cleaner and richer, it looks awesome... however, it was quite slow on P4, but today with quad cpu is extremely fast... i suppose that even HD recoding is under acceptable duration...

Technically, you would lose some quality as others have said. But, at least in my experience, with a good AVC encoder you would never notice the difference. I've seen a lot of HDV material reencoded onto AVCHD discs and it always looks transparent to the original HDV tape.

I have no problem playing m2t files out of my Canon HV20 on the PS3. My preferred method is to convert the m2t files to AVC using X264. It takes a long time to encode but the results are amazing. I should state I'm not burning to Blu-Ray disc but rather DVD.

I´m sorry, but HD material on DVD makes no sense. The mere idea must originate from someone who is "digitally tone deaf"! Sony seems reluctant to even "allow" AVCHD on Blu-ray discs. Our technical sanity is challenged one step further!
