Default We need accurate reviews on this site

ok, i'm not looking to upset a bunch of people again like with some of my previous threads...but i'd love non biased sony reviews..every sony picture gets great reviews and i don't know which ones i should really buy...let's take rocky balboa for example..the overall score is a 4.5, so i go out and buy it with some sort of high expectations for a film that scored that high..and after the movie was over, i was like, "eh", i mean, the PQ for the final boxing scene is incredible..but i'll probably never watch this again..i guess i should just use my discretion next time..oh, and same with vacancy..i'll never watch that again, except to watch kate beckinsale get pwned at the end

You should read MORE THAN 1 review to get a better idea overall. (for instance, this review over at HiDefDigest http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/rockybalboa.html) Also, you should always take reviews worth a grain of salt because you might not have the same opinion as the masses. You can't really blame the review and claim the reviewer as biased. I personally think Rocky Balboa on blu-ray got exactly the rating it deserved.

How is someone's personal opinion about a movie inaccurate? The critics panned 'Joe Dirt' but I love it. Does that make my opinion inaccurate?

i guess it's a matter of opinion..when superbad comes out, depending on the PQ and SQ, it should score around the same, and to me, there should be some seperation between the ordinary and exceptional films

Might also say that you might pose a question out here on the boards if you are thinking about buying a certain movie. The folks around here are good about expressing their assessment on PQ, SQ and their overall opinion on the film.

Good point. I guess the bottom line is that you can't just read a review, buy the movie, then complain when your opinion of it doesn't match exactly what the reviewers was.

I do a whack of reviews for our dealers (AV) on BD discs in our newsletter. I can shoot you that via e-mail if you like. I usually pop in a couple of PS3 games and there's a few SD titles but the bulk are Blu-Ray. They're short little reviews with specs like aspect ratios and audio with honest views on quality and what I personally thought of the film. Let me know if anyone wants this. You can e-mail me at dave@evolutionaudiovideo.com back issues are available as well - they're all PDFs.

i mean, it deepens my collection and i don't regret the purchase, the point i'm trying to make is, when a truly great film comes out, like superbad, it should have a higher regard..like, if u scan through the reviews, it's almost like every sony picture is a must own..and i don't like renting blu rays, i got myself a nice collection going and i want to have a library of films

the only review i have had a problem with was "Gone in 60"
If the dude did not like the film because he had to watch it so many times in the theater or whatever he should not have reviewed it. I am not saying it deserved a better score but it was better than some of the movies out there (like sky high)

I can understand reading only one review of a movie. There really is only a few sites that review movies. I mean I can only find about 96,000,000 on google http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=movie+reviews . It must be hard. Hey wait, can't you also write your own review on this site. That would make it really easy to make your opinions heard. Just an idea.

The problem is there is a big difference between something being a well made good film and you liking it and you have to separate the two. For example, i didn't care the much for history of violence, one of the highest rated movies of that year, however, i could tell it was a very well made film and understood why it got such high scores from all the reviewers. Too many personal things can make you like or not like a movie even if it's well made and gets a high score so don't automatically expect to like something if it's scored high or low for that matter.

Reviews can be tricky though. When Fight Club came out it got very poor reviews.

yeah that's true but that's why i also said low because it can definitely can go both ways because maybe some reviewers aren't as impartial as they should be though i suppose they are just human too

This is the perfect example or your argument in reverse. I though Superbad was OK, but in no way a "truly great film". Will I buy it when it comes out? Probably. Will it get watched over and over? Probably not. We all have so many different tastes in film, I pretty much rely on the disc reviews for A/V and extras quality, not if I think I will like the film.

For the record, my disliking of Gone in 60 Seconds has nothing to do with having had to sit through it a million times. I genuinely dislike the film as I think it is poorly written, has terrible car chases and essentially exists to showcase a few cars without any substance. Of course, films don't have to have substance, but Gone in 60 Seconds could have been, in my opinion, so much better if the filmmakers had taken a little more time and worked with a better script. That's just my opinion and I certainly woudn't expect anyone to agree!
