Default PS3 Blu Ray Remote (Do I want it?)

Hi,

Well,.. After having my PS3 for more then a year now, I just bought the Ps3 Blu Ray Remote today. I had credit a gamestop and was getting tired of waiting for used Blu Rays to come in that I didn't already have and then I got a 10% off coupon via email and suddenly went silly and bought the Remote.

Now,.. I can't figure out if I want to keep it or not. It's new and sealed and I considered trying to trade if for any used Blu Ray that I don't have.

I have been using my Logitech Universal Remote with my PS3 since the day I set it up via a popular work around to the lack of IR problem. (Bought a PS2 remote long ago and PS2 to USB converter.)

So,.. Some one walk me through this,.. What bothers me about the official remote is ... It's not backlit which is critical because I build a dedicated HT and it's pitch black (no windows) when I watch a movie. It doesn't control volume of my AVR which my current solution does. It also doesn't let me turn on and off the projector which my current solution does.

I'm confused... On the one hand I think this is a quality official product that is cool and on the other hand I think it's limitations and short comings are going to piss me off if I try to use it.

So,.. I ask for some advice,... What should I do?

Dazed and Confused,

Brian

I love the remote...works great for me. I dont have a receiver or projector to work though..soo...hmm..might be frustrating for you. I just need to use 2 remotes, tv and PS3. The remote is definitely a quality product, and I've gotten use to where certain buttons are so dont need the backlight..though it would of been nice. They have dropped in price since I bought mine, so if you have the coupon, etc, it might be worth getting. Thanks

I love the remote and use it a lot (usually even starting games with it and then realizing I need to turn on the controller for the game to work). Not being backlit isn't a problem for me since the buttons are big and laid out nicely. I use it so much I have all the buttons I use memorized and since they include a little bump on the Play key (like keyboards do for the home position), it's easy to use without looking at it. I also love that it's bluetooth since my coffee table is in the line of sight for IR remotes meaning I have to hold the remote at weird angles for my other devices.

But, considering your situation and what you want from it, it looks to me like you have a very workable solution already.

I got one and I use it a lot I must say. Really nice when watching movies, and good for a quick turn on and turn off and checking some stuff without having to powerup the controller etc...

I use a Phillips Pronto with that Nyko USB to Infrared connector for the primary control but I still bought the PS3 BD remote for all the other commands that will be needed in the the future. The infrared solutions don't have codes for color buttons, numbers, audio/video control, etc.

The PS3 remote would be a bargain at double the price.

I prefer the controller as I don't have to spend another 20 bucks for another remote which really is just not needed. lol. I really need to get a Harmony or something.

Thanks for the replies.

What the heck,.. it only cost $22.50 with the coupon and I had that much in credit anyway from trading in various stuff. (Mostly DVD's I no longer wanted.)

So,.. I'm going to keep it. I may not end up using it but I want to give it a try and see how I like it.

My PS3 is in the next room outside the theater so the BlueTooth will work better then my current solution which involves a IR repeater but works pretty good anyways.

I wish they PS3 remote had an A-B button but it does have eject and PS buttons that my IR setup didn't have.

I got the remote because i have a 2 year old and every time i tried watching a blu-ray and he saw me pick up the controller he wanted to play and threw tantrums when i didnt let him play(pretend) so i just bought the remote so he knows that daddy will be watching movies. I still cant get use to that its blue tooth so you still find me pointing that thing at the ps3 at times. One thing i dont like is sometimes when im laying in bed and accidentally hit a button and fast forwards then i gotta look for the remote and put it somewhere where i dont accidentally tap it, but other than that i love it.

The BD remote was one of the accessories, i thought i probably wouldn't buy - but i did.

I always use it when watching a movie, and also use it when i am using my PS3 to access the music on my NAS drive.

In addition to that, the wife loves it - much easier for her to use than have to remember which buttons do what on the Sixaxis. If the wife approves of a gadget for the PS3, you know it's a winner.

I hate IR, and I love the ps3 remote. I wish all my devices were blu-tooth.

Remote is great.

Lots of reasons mentioned, and I'm not reading through them all, but will give my primary reason for buying the remote:

When watching a movie, you're draining the batteries on the sixaxis unless you turn it off. This is annoying to do, and even more annoying when have to turn it back on just to pause the movie.

The remote is always on, and I don't have to worry about burning out my rechargeable sixaxis batteries. It also feels more natural and professional to use a remote for navigating movies and menus rather than a gaming controller.

My only complaint is the stop button is located immediately above? the pause button and in the dark, half the time I hit the wrong one and interrupt my movie. Boo. Same for skip/chapter skip when ffw/rew.

You could save 2.50 and get it at CC. Not sure if 2.50 is worth the effert though.
