Music & Romance 6-Film Collection (1988-2004) (Mill Creek Entertainment)

Mill Creek will be releasing a 6-film collection dedicated to Music and Romance on August 29th. Most of these films are being released on Blu-ray for the first time.

Films included:

Madame Sousatzka (1988)
Shout (1991)
Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001)
The Caveman's Valentine (2001)
The Man Who Cried (2001)
Connie and Carla (2004)

Thought Universal lost Madame Sousatzka since they only had distribution rights on loan from Cineplex Odeon? It was on digital HD but disappeared.

Worth it for Madame Sousatzka, the others not so much.

Okey dodie then, I got this in from an Amazon order and I have some good and bad news with this set.

First the only bad thing is Madame Sousatzka is 1080i 1080i/60HZ!. It's also in 1.78 and appears to be based on a HDTV master as it's a higher quality version of the Peacock/HDTV rip making the rounds at places. Luckily there's no messy frame blending stuff going on, but while Mill Creek has done this in the past with some no-name indie titles they released, it's also not the norm for anyone in the current day and age where most everything is encoded in at least 24fps.

OTOH, good news is it's 3 discs spread out 6 films, with two films each taking approx.. 19-23gbs. PQ is surprisingly decent for Mill Creek standards and audio varies in lossless DTS-MA 5.1 and 2.0 for certain titles. All other titles aside Madame Sousatzka are OAR and 1080p 23.976

Again, PQ isn't bad considering these Universal masters are old but not slathered in DNR.

Think Mill Creek did it with Creature With The Atom Brain on their Sci-Fi set as well.

Still, this set doesn't sound like there are any issues with the films like that one.

I just double checked, only Madame Sousatzka is 1080i and the rest are 1080p 23.976. My player was giving me strange settings but viewing in BDInfo cleared up some things.

Watched Madame Sousatzka thought it looked quite good. Not perfect obviously but I can't see us getting anything better anytime soon, sadly.

I really wish that somebody would release THE GLASS MENAGERIE (1987, directed by Paul Newman, starring John Malkovich and Karen Allen). That was another Cineplex Odeon release that Universal leased for VHS and laserdisc back in the day.

That ones no longer with Universal. It confirmed to be with Filmrise as they control the Alliance catalog outside Canada.

Perhaps Canadian International Pictures or FCE would get to that one since both have dealings with Filmrise.

I've seen this set and some others in Canadian Walmart locations, for $20. However, I found and then ordered this one for $10 on Amazon.ca from a third-party but fulfilled by Amazon. Will actually be my first Mill Creek release in my collection, as their releases don't seem to dominate the bargain bins and clearances here to nearly the same extent they do in the States.

Based on this thread I pulled out my set and watched Madame Sousatzka today. Enjoyed the movie and it did look really good.
