Default 1492 - Conquest of Paradise

This movie was amazing.

Anyone hear of a Blu-Ray release? I have scanned and searched all over and can't find any announcements. I'm hoping that someone might have some good news!

this is a wish list topic, but a friend has wanted a special edition DVD release for this for years... I would guess Ridley would work on it when he gets spare time it is one of the last few films that he hasn't done a special edition for. Who knows at this point

i don't think a DVD was ever released in the US for 1492 though.. I should change that to just a DVD release in general.

Sucks when good movies don't even make it to DVD.. or are discountinued.

There was NEVER a DVD release for Region 1... just ridiculous. Other regions have the film on DVD, plus there are good 'ol fashioned bootlegs. I did consider getting a copy from overseas, but none offer any extras etc. so I've just been waiting.. waiting!

and one point wasn't it rumoured that Ridley was going to construct a new cut of the film? The Japanese laserdisc I own only has a marginal more footage than the US release, but contains violence that was obviousily clipped to secure it's PG-13 rating. (as well as a haunting scene where one the characters who having been bitten by and dying from a snake bite, is buried during a torrential rain storm)

I have a Brazilian release and a Korean one that came with a cd of the soundtrack as well as the US laserdisc. It stumps me on how such a beautiful movie hasn't even had even a bare bones only DVD release. I read an article eons ago where Scott mentioned he wanted to go back to his older material and give it a deluxe treatment. This is my most anticipated one, and I keep waiting - year after year... I read once that there was a 3+ hour first cut of this movie, but I'm sure that's more rumor than fact.

Those additonal 5 or so minutes of extra footage left out of the US release are actually pretty good. Small bits here and there, but effective.

Last I read was that Scott Free (Ridley's production company) was in the process of prepping some kind of 4 hour expanded anniversary edition for broadcast on HBO or something.

This is an amazing film that was undeservedly critically panned and a box office failure. For that reason it has been seldom released in the U.S. I still have my old laserdisc and picked up a Region 2 DVD about 10 years ago that looked severely compressed but it had about 12 minutes or so of footage not seen in the U.S. theatrical cut. From what I have read, A LOT more was cut and the intent was to do a proper exhibition as a tele-film or something. I have been waiting for a proper DVD release since the format's inception and a first-class Bluray release would be a dream.

I think the total extra footage released so far has consisted of 6 minutes worth, including these scenes, which are in both my Region 3 Korean release and Region 2 Brazilian release:

Christopher Columbus sits down to talk to his wife
One man is bit by a deadly snake and dies
Chistopher Columbus and his joke around about food
The burnings are shown in close up shots
Gun shot blast to the helmet is more graphic
A stabbing features more blood

I love this film. It will put some people to sleep (since it moves at a slow pace, but trys hard to capture the event). It's also the only film Scott has ever done with Gerard Depardieu, and Vangelis score is at times to much to handle but adds a certain nuance to the period the film chronicles. It has gotten nitpicked and unfairly blasted by critics and film buffs since released in 1992, but has it's own share of admirers and some even place it in their top 5 Scott films ever.

I don't know why Ridley Scott has never released a bare bones Widescreen DVD, it's a beautiful looking film and with Vangelis score it's sound incredible. Would make for a perfect Blu-ray disc if done properly. I love Gladiator, Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, Alien, Body Of Lies, Matchstick Men, American Gangster, Kingdon Of Heaven DC, Legend DC, among other Scott films. I hope he revisits this work of his soon, the films 20th anniversary is approaching.

I just noticed that Christopher Columbus: The Discovery became the first 1992 Columbus film to hit Blu-ray disc in Germany and worldwide. I prefer Scott's vision and it baffles me as to why no Blu-ray disc or Region 1 DVD is available of the film, as 1492 would look and sound amazing in hi-definition.

I also enjoyed this film very much and would certainly add it to my Blu Ray collection without hesitation. Beautiful scenery.. wonderful music score. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

I have been able to add Terrence Malick's The New World to my Blu-Ray Collection but always wanted to see Ridley Scott's 1492: Conquest of Paradise. They would make excellent companion pieces.

In my opinion Ridley Scott is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with. Epic movies are his forte as he appears to be our likely "contemporary successor" to legendary film maker David Lean... big shoes to fill, at least Mr Scott has a flair for the EPIC and is carrying on this bold tradition.

Perhaps we may eventually see a Blu-Ray edition. I'd be eager to add this to my Blu-Ray collection, too.

Amazon France is showing a Blu-Ray release of 1492: Christophe Colomb with Gerard Depardieu scheduled for an October 6th 2010 release date. Now this is one movie that will look amazing on Blu-Ray disc! I agree with poster above...

I am as exited as you all are about this coming bluray, but i am interested to find out how much efforts the studios put - into the scan / transfer of that movie. It Could probably be a first print to ease all demands for now... land later comes a better print...

OK Im a bit new to the whole import thing....dont want to spend alot of money and get burned. Is this getting a US release? And if not, is the French release able to play in US BD players? Not too schooled on DVD regions. I know that 1 is US and 0 is all encompassing but thats about it.

Any info would be great

A poster in the France thread said that the 1492 France Blu-ray should be region free, of course I will wait just like you to see if it indeed is and of course the quality of the print is of huge concern. Scott has never done a Director approved and supervised transfer of this film, however it should probably blow all the prints used on any of the old PAL DVD's away.
