Default I used to be pro HD-DVD but there's 1 feature of Blu-ray that has turned me Blu...

uncompressed PCM audio. I picked up a PS3 and bought Crank and Chicago and have screened them both in my home theater. Now granted I'm using the opictal cable and my receiver doesn't support the full PCM bandwidth. But the sound that I'm hearing from these uncompressed PCM tracks blow away anything I've got on the 30+ HD-DVD's I own. If all uncompressed PCM soundtracks are as loud and clear as Crank and Chicago are then my non-exclusive HD-DVD buying will easily come to an end and I'll be buying the Blu version easily.

Virtually all movies from BD-exclusive studios include lossless audio (mostly UPCM). Most new Warner titles do too.

Welcome! Nature's Journey is amazing. The blu-ray version has higher bitrate video and audio. I just watched it the other day and I am so happy with my blu-ray.

I'm in the same boat---but even in forced surround the PCM tracks outperform anything else I've heard on my system. Planning on a receiver upgrade sometime in 2008...

There is definitely a big difference between PCM and regular DD. Most HD-DVD movies lack this due to either bandwidth or space limitation. For the "true look and sound of perfect" nothing beats Blu-Ray

nice one - Chicago's 24-bit PCM track is definitely one of the best you can get.

I believe the Pirates movies and The Prestige are 24 bit PCM too.

Just the thought of something like Chicago or Immortal Beloved not in lossless audio makes me cringe. I mean, without music, what are those movies about?!?

I'm so glad they are on the Blu side.

There's TWO features that turned me toward Blu: Better PQ and better AQ.

Hmm... so let me get this straight: you can't enjoy the uncompressed PCM because you're only using an optical connection to what I would imagine is a DTS receiver, but it somehow sounds better.

Not that the uncompressed PCM on BD's isn't a great advantage to HD DVD, but optical can at most handle DTS bandwidth and it's the same thing you've been hearing your HD DVD's with DD+ at 1.5 Mbps downscaled to DTS through optical. Get an Onkyo 605 or something to experience the power of uncompressed PCM.

It's not bandwidth, it's copy protection that forbids more than 2 channels of PCM (or 5.1 TrueHD/DTS-HD MA) to be sent through optical and coaxial.

Optical can send 2-channel PCM and on my system, it also sounds better than 5.1 DD or DTS.

You can get 2-channel PCM via optical. One's mileage may vary, but running the stereo PCM through XM's proprietary "Neural Surround" setting (actually designed for music) on my receiver sounds much better to my ears than any 5.1 DTS or Dolby soundtrack I've heard. It's a forced-surround scenario, but the effect of the broader audio spectrum (pushing more air) cannot be denied: more "air," more transparency---an altogether more effective and immersive experience. I can't wait till I can upgrade my receiver to something that can accept audio via HDMI.

I disagree with this opinion. I'm sure it sounds better on a 2 channel speaker set up, but 2.1, 3.1, or 5.1, the extra information in dolby or dts 5.1 tracks far exceed what is being lost in compression of the 2 front channels. The output from the subwoofer alone makes a huge difference. Now I know there's more to audio than bass, the subwoofer is just the easiest example of a major audible difference between dolby / dts and 2-channel pcm.

At least on my audio equipment, Yamaha receiver & Polk rti speakers - better than most home speaker set-ups, but certainly not high end.

I started pro HD DVD only because a Best Buy employee tricked me (I should've done research on my own first), he convinced me with this whole story of how porn on HD DVD will make it the dominant format. I regret that decision, but I make good money for a single guy with substantial savings so it could've been much worse... i.e. small loss

What turned me Blu... disc sales and the fact that I think Blu in PS3 will continue to play a dominant role, plus studio support... If I had any idea of studio support I would've never boought HD DVD

Though I am selling my HD DVD periph & 360 to a friend, I am going to keep my soon HD DVD titles and likely buy another HD player if they sale under $200 (especially since I'll get another 7 free movies) come late winter... Regardless, I'll continue to buy predominately Blu

Kind of rambling but one thing I don't like is the idea of people who purchased Blu Players having antiquated machines in the near future. I personally went with the PS3.

oO, well, whatever floats your boat, though I have to say that I find it a little strange that you'd find listening to 2 channel audio matrixed into surround better than pure 5.1. I'd be surprised if it can even create decent rear channel sound since I wouldn't think there would be any out of phase stuff as is the case in 2 channel Dolby prologic compatible broadcasts.
IMO the slight increase in bandwidth is removed given the lack of information being fed to four other channels.
