Default More format wars?

yes weve prettymuch won the hd dvd format war but looking at wiki there are some others that seem to be in development that could come onto the market and threatern our lead
these are:

FVD (Forward versatile disk)
doesn't seem like much of a contender basicly a improved dvd with multiple layers can hold 15gb. but it is cheaper that either blu or hd dvd

HDVMD (versatile Multilayer Disc)
uses a red ray laser and a form of enhancement allowing it to hold lots of layers allowing for currently 30gb per side but that is improving

UDO (ultra Density Optical)
uses same technology as a blu ray it currently has 60gb per layer discs but is more costy than blus

LS-R
it stacks lots of layers of blu-ray tech could hold 1 terabite of data but its in quite low stages of development

For more info go on optical discs on wikipedia. what do you think of this?

Even though the formats exist. No one has taken an interest to them. Blu ray can hold up to 200GB with 8 layers... So even if some of those take off Blu-ray can still be ahead. Hopefully they can add the additionall layers with firmware but in the past that has not happened.

Honestly would we need this much room? Regardless i's far too late for anyone else to enter the HD race.

FVD - DOA
HDVMD - no long term advantages over Blu-ray
UDO - storage capacity not big enough to warrant scrapping Blu-ray
LS-R - Too far down the road and too expensive

Need? Probably not (though you never know, if the space is available software companies will find away to use it all). It's like getting a pay raise. You should suddenly have this extra money sitting around each month. But usually you don't - it just magically gets used up.

Want? Definitely. Heck, I could literally back up my entire hard drive onto one disc (would I ever back up the entire hard drive? Again, probably not, but you never know). I could certainly combine multiple s-DVDs onto one disc - maybe put an entire season of some show onto one disc so I don't have to swap out. Or all of the extended LotR on one disc (until it goes Blu, of course).

but its cheaper so i think HDVMD could be a possible contender considering its 30gb on a considerably cheaper disk

you do realise thats 60gb per layer right but it costs more by about 15 20 pounds a disk

for recording in HD, why not?...

I am talking about home use...and maybe putting a few high quality high def movies on one disc...

I think Blu Ray winning is a done deal.

So,.. I'm spending less time here and going back to the Coffee, Tea, or Milk forums. That's one, similar to the Soup or Salad wars, that has raged on for generations and I don't think we are going to have a clear victor within my lifetime.

There are always a dozen disc formats in development

Of which maybe 1 will ever have a commercial product put out, of which one in a hundred will actually gain acceptance

Who remembers Floptical discs? They held 21MB instead of 1.44. How about FMD-ROM? The format that was so cool and promising but never quite made it out there(cause it was a fraud)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluores...ultilayer_Disc

None of them, and that includes the holographic disc are going anywhere near a home video format for at least 15 years, and then it'll be something other than them

The reason none of these are part of the war is the fact that they have NO CONTENT!
Not only are they 2 or 3 years behind in development, there are no films released on them and they have no wide following. Both Blu and HD have big followings and lots (more than 300) films.
If they were to come to market, they would never be anything but niche products.

Ditto. Just because something is better doesn't mean it will gain acceptence.
HDM Studios are commited to BD and HD DVD - period. They can't possibly be stupid enough to allow this montage into the mix. Well, you never know with Paramount.

Not only is BD100 staring us in the face, they can slightly upgrade the capacity of the disc and still remain compatible with the player. HD DVD was 15gb and is now 17GB on the triple layer - which has yet to surface.

Only a true optical disc MIGHT have a chance. The next natural progression is the same as the music industry from CD to .mp3. The future of movies is in downloads and memory sticks. Doesn't mean disc formats are going in any case.
