United Kingdom Doctor Who - The Complete Fifth Series

The Complete Fifth Series of Doctor Who is now up for pre-order on Amazon with an RRP of £79.99, but a pre-order price of £59.99 and has a release date set for 8th November. That's quite a lot.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Who-Complete-5-Blu-ray/dp/B003XIIW2Y/ref=sr_1_7?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1280318532&sr=1-7

There is also a Limited Edition Tin 'Crack' Set, however it does say "NOT FINAL ARTWORK" on the cover and it has been used for both the DVD and Blu-ray versions. So I would suggest anyone considering to get this version to wait until the final artwork is shown because I'm not convinced what is being shown at the moment is close to what the final version will be like.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Who-Complete-Limited-Blu-ray/dp/B003XIIW3I/ref=sr_1_7?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1280319458&sr=1-7

Here is a list of the Special Features:-
  • Additional scenes: Meanwhile in the TARDIS - additional scenes, written by Steven Moffat and featuring Matt Smith & Karen Gillan, telling the story of what happens between episodes. Why was Amy floating in Space above Starship UK, and what happened after 'that' kiss between the Doctor and Amy? - Exclusive to DVD and Blu-ray.
  • Monster Files - The Monster Files will get under the skin and inside the minds of the latest Doctor's most challenging opponents. With previously unseen footage and exclusive comments from cast and crew, the Monster Files take fans old and new even further behind enemy lines.
  • Outtakes
  • In-vision commentaries
  • Video Diary
  • Confidential Cut Downs
  • BBC Trails and Promos to New Series 5

I personally thought this was the best series of the the revived show because Steven Moffat really understands how to write for Doctor Who and Matt Smith is very alien which I found very refreshing after David Tennant.

Enjoy.

Am I the only one hoping that it turns out to be a steelbook set?

Wait, I thought someone at the BBC said that the series 5 trailers wouldn't be on the full set.

And I wonder why the Confidentials have been cut down. I can understand it for the DVD version, but the Blu-ray version should be able to hold the full Confidential episodes without any problems, seeing as how there is more memory on BD discs and what have you.

No, you're not the only one hoping it's going to be a steelbook, although I think this is more likely to be a tin box with the regular case inside.

As for the trails, what they actually said was that the 'Next Time' trails won't be at the end of the episodes; these are more likely to be trailers that were shown on TV to advertise the show.

It's just easier and cheaper to keep all the special features the same for both Blu-ray and DVD, so there are only the Cut-Down Confidentials.

I guess that is fair, but by the special features listing that you posted earlier, it seems like a lot of material was left out when compared to the extras released on the website after each episode of series 5/31.

Then again, the BBC does need to keep some stuff to keep website traffic up.

If this does turn out to be a steelbook, then it could be a jumbo steelbook like the US Monsters' Inc, UP and Fast And Furious sets were, but that does seem unlikely. Wouldn't mind though.

I would have liked to see some BD-Live releated Doctor Who features listed aswell. Can't have eveything though.

Surprised at the price given the individual set's only cost about £12 each, at that rate it'll be slightly more expensive then all those put together, I was expecting £45-50. Great series mind.

Does anybody know if the Who Blu's are region locked?

I'm wondering if any of the specials were, as that might be an indication as to whether or not series 5 might be.

So far (to my knowledge) no BBC Blu-ray release has been region locked. However, they can sometimes be released as 50hz, which renders them unplayable on most US players and/or displays. Being filmed for UK TV, the BBC uses 1080i 50hz for its filming.

The Specials were 60hz, but the stand-alone "Vanilla" Blu-ray releases of S5 are in 50hz. Note however these do not have international distribution. It's unknown if the complete series will be in 50hz or 60hz being as the same content will be released internationally.

It's fair to say though that converting the source from 50hz to 60hz has introduced artifacts and smearing in the past, so UK customers are hoping the BBC will release the UK set encoded at 50hz and do a seperate 60hz encoding for international use.

United Kingdom DTS or 2:0 stereo?

Anyone know what the sound will be on this set, I've ordered anyway but would be a happy bunny if it was DTS/5:1

All Doctor Who series box sets are 5.1 and this one'll be no different, so you'll be a very happy bunny.

I'm not going anywhere near this until it is confirmed as 5.1 audio.... no-way am i buying it with 2.0 stereo, just for them to force a possible a double dip on fans who are the lifeblood of the show...

Furthermore... people should just full on refuse to buy them with 2.0 audio, or else your setting a precedent for future series releases with sub standard audio

It is 5.1, it always has been, it's the standard for all BBC box sets. It won't be confirmed because it's what the BBC does all the time.

Yes, the voulmes are 2.0, but that has been the same for every single series of new Doctor Who, just the same as the box sets have always been 5.1. What makes you think this series will be any different, especially if it's the first to be filmed in HD, bar the specials? I've looked at various websites and they allo say 5.1. I think you're being too causious.

No other seasons of the Doctor were released in Blu-ray.
This is the first time they release a season set in BD.

Do you think they will go and re-author all the discs all over again just for the Complete Series 5 set? I sure hope so...

I do know that this was the first season to be release on Blu-ray, I'm own all the other box sets as well as many of the classic series DVDs.

As for your question on the re-authoring - The volumes and the box set are totally different, ie. the volume releases won't be put inside a larger box and released. The discs for the box set will be different to the volumes, so there'll be different menus, special features, etc, but the discs will have same episodes on them.

So no re-authoring will be required.

So if i'm following what you are saying correctly, then:

All previous "volume" sets on DVD were 2.0 audio... and,
All previous "boxsets" collection on DVD were 5.1 audio ???

I have to own up here, i have never bought any Doctor Who volumes OR boxsets before as i hated it with David Tennant and his various assistants (especially that horrible Catherine Tate effort)

However the new Matt Smith Doctor & Amy Pond combination totally hooked me in I found it far more watchable

Yes, because they're completely seperate releases, they have no relation to each other, other than the fact that they contain the same episodes.

The likely reason for the 2.0 on the volumes is that they're targetted at the audience with a smaller budget and would rather get them as soon as possible, but the box set if aimed at those who want all the supplements, including a 5.1 sound sytem.

Trust me on this, I'm not lying.

I know, but for me it didn't seem to come across that way. It just felt as though everyone was unsure, whilst I knew for a fact that it was 5.1, and I wasn't able to convince one or two people that what I was saying was a fact.
