Default Warner Amazon.com sale rankings between Blu & HD-DVD

Warner announced a few months ago that they were going to watch the results this upcoming holiday season to see who sells more to MAYBE make a decision who they would support exclusively, either Blu-ray or HD-DVD.

So, I decided to do a little research on Amazon.com. This took about 2 hours to type up, so bear with me and read it all! I only included Warner movie's starting from the beginning of October since to me, that is what clarifies the "Holiday Season." It also would have taken me too long to look up all other movies's both released on Blu-ray and HD-DVD. Granted, this is just one website, and a lot of these movies aren’t released yet. But if this is a sign of things to come, it looks like we are showing Warner who buys more!

According to Amazon.com, here are the following rankings when it comes to Warner films. The comparison’s are Blu-ray’s to HD-DVD’s. The rankings are in Amazon.com’s DVD category. These results are as of 10:00 PM CDT (USA) Sunday, October 21, 2007. The leading seller is in Bold Print.

Enjoy my friends.

True, but that is way too easy for them. They need to make it complicated, they need to investigate, report, investigate more and then think about it for a few years.

Stevie Wonder could tell Warner who sells more. Question is does Warner want to sell movies or take bribes?

Blu has all of the important/big-name movies!!!

2001: A Space Odyssey
Full Metal Jacket (Deluxe Edition)
The Shining
Oceans Trilogy (movies 11, 12, 13)
Harry Potter Box Set (movie’s 1-5)
Blade Runner: Complete Collectors Edition

That's because those HD-DVD guys do not have as many overall choices as Blu-ray owners. We Blu-ray supporters have to choose whether our money is going to go to the Die Hard Boxed Set, the Simpsons Movie, Spider-Man Trilogy, Superbad, Pirates of the Caribbean: AWE, 2001, Harry Potter, Close Encounters, etc, etc. We have to be able to spread our money out a lot more and some of the "lesser" titles will have to go on the back burner or get kicked to the curb altogether. Those HD-DVD guys don't have to worry about being able to afford those "second/third-tier" movies on HD-DVD because they have nothing else on the shelf to purchase. Have money will spend. I think it's a law, or something.

Wow---put a little time into this, did you?

If Warner actually makes a decision to go one way or the other based on 4th quarter sales, it would seem their path is laid clearly before them...unless Toshiba starts giving away HD-DVD players with Happy Meals.

If Blu-rays and hd-duds were ONLY sold on Amazon, I might be more excited. WB isn't going to look at sales from ONE outlet.

Well, Amazon's numbers are all being reported for the Neilsens. WB may not care about head-to-head rankings, but the Blu-heavy distribution certainly works to BD's favor in assessing the all important 4Q sales.

I'm sure they will when there is some profile 1.1 players to test/play them on, to me, this is the biggest stumbling block for any exclusivity deals to be had....

EDIT> PS34EVER - Excellent work on the OP....... THANKS

Unfortunately, in the world of movie studios, releases and different video formats it's never that cut and dry. There is always politics involved in every major decision made.

So, with that in mind, we just have to keep our fingers crossed.

Oh, and also keep buying WB Blu-rays.

I don't think Warner came out and exactly said we will discontinue HD DVD if the Holiday sales don't improve over BD. They just said they would be watching the figures. What does that mean? It could mean anything to them. I am sure all studios are watching their sales. Warner probably already realizes that BD sales percentages are going to show a wider gap with all of the good exclusive BD titles that are coming out. I do think though that if Warner did go Blu-Ray exclusive, that Universal might go Neutral. And I don't think Paramount at this point even would have the option to return to releasing BDs yet.

When Warner goes Blu exclusive, Universal would be INSANE to continue HD-DVD exclusive. Not only would the writing be on the wall, but the HD-DVD wall would be bulldozed by such a Warner move. And such a decisive move by Warner would really be in their customers long term interest also. Even the current HD-DVD owners.
