After a lot of contemplating, I finally picked myself up an Onkyo TX-SR805. I know it got excellent reviews, but I've always been a Sony type of guy and as such have always had sony receivers. I have no experience with Onkyo whatsoever, plus this model was about twice the price of what I am used spending on a receiver.
Oh, and about twice as heavy as well... Anyway, So far I am glad I got this receiver. The sound is nice and crisp and the dialog seems to be much clearer as well. There are however a couple of things I don't fully understand yet. For starters, everytime I turn up the volume, the displays shows the xxdB's as going down. How does that work? Secondly, when I did a "auto" config in my PS3, it only detected 5.1. I did a manual config and enabled every single option there was to enable ... such as pcm 7.1 48khz, pcm 7.1 96khz etc. After doing so it gave me a warning that incorrect settings can destroy the receiver/speakers. Can anyone confirm this particular receiver can indeed handle all those settings? Lastly, for those with this receiver ... do you like? Last edited by GreenMotion; 07-02-2007 at 03:27 AM. |

Im thinking of trading up mine for 1 of those...I have a 803 and is great but im missing a few features that the 805 has...as for the volume, mine has the option to change the display to up/down or show dbs...if the dbs are going down as you put up the volume you re in -dbs...kind of your minus so have to to reach 0 to go up lol.
Not sure about your PS3 settings...mine is h/u to HDMI and works great w/o any kind of warnings..... ![]() |

As far as I can tell, if your receiver can't handle the sampling rate (192khz for example) then all you're getting is distortion. This distortion will damage your speakers. fuad |

I just got a 605 (805's little brother) and I enabled everything and got the same "warning". Mine kicks ass and I have had no problems with it. It took a while to setup and get everything working, but I have my TV sound running to it via optical, my PS3 via HDMI, and my Wii via component. Everything sounds great and I haven't had any issues. Congrats on your purchase.

Thanks for all the responses.
I was actually eye-balling the 605 as well, but Circuit City had a 260 dollar discount on the 805, bringing my total with tax to 905. So I decided to go with it instead. grip24: Thank you for mentioning my sound setup was in "-dBs mode". I had no idea it had different modes .... I clicked thru the setup some more, and finally found that particular setting. Are you guys listening to it stricly in "pure" mode, or "THX" mode? Does it allow special effects like the sony receivers? I.e. Large Hall, Concert, etc. etc.? |

Which Blu-ray discs have TrueHD in the first place? :P
I'd only go as far to say Ghost Rider. Otherwise, wait for 300. |

I own this receiver, but I have a question...My bluray player is the PS3 (mainly because of the processing power), but I'm a little confused about the sound. I have the audio setup on the PS3 at Linear PCM. I'm connected to the receiver through HDMI. Now, when I play a movie all I see on the receiver is "multichannel" even if i select TrueHD (ghost rider). Is this correct?
Another question... I use the Panasonic DVD-S97S as my dvd player and that is connected through HDMI as well. DD 5.1 shows up on receiver as PLIIx Movie...correct? Thx in advance. |

I am watching "Letters of Iwo Jima" which should be TrueHD, but my receiver says its multichannel PCM.
The picture of the 805 on the onkyo website shows the 805 with TrueHD on the display ... Does anyone know how to get it to pick up the TrueHD? |

I have a question. I just purchased the new Panasonic BD30k and while I'm able to get the TrueHD and DTS-HD Master to display on the Onkyo SR805, I'm a little confused about PCM. All my settings are set to bitstream, but when I play a PCM track it goes to Neural THX 7.1 automatically. On my PS3 it would automatically go to Multichannel. I guess my question is which audio mode is the SR805 suppose to be on for PCM?

I have the 805 (great receiver) and my PS3/blu-ray setup for audio went smooth; every audio option was auto-selected (including several 7.1 PCM options) except one (AACS I believe).
I did have a problem when I tried to redo my video setup through the 805, the screen went black, I waited (maybe not long enough), then I hit back direction and just did it manually, not sure what was going on exactly since I did not have a problem using the auto-setup (video) to my TV (through an HDMI switch), did not investigate it though since it works perfectly. Make sure you have the surround channels enabled from the menu, if not already, I suppose it could be the problem. Turn everything off, turn on your receiver, select PS3 input, turn on your PS3, then do PS3 audio setup, then repeat video setup if needed. |

Thanks Jay, but my question in on the Panasonic BD30K to the SR805. The Pany doesn't decode audio like the PS3, instead it lets the receiver do the work. For the first time I'm able to see Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MSTR on the 805 screen but i'm confused about the PCM. Right now it goes to Neural THX, but I don't think that's right.

![]() Since I use the PS3 I get 7.1 PCM, but from what I read there is no difference in sound/quality; can anybody confirm this using the same audio settings for both? |
