Default Onkyo Tx-sr805

I got my ONKYO TX-SR805 on Friday, yesterday.
I purchased it from shoponkyo.com when they had the 10% off and also the 10 sign up bonus. AND a free TX8222 receiver
The unit is refurbished

$599 - $60 - $10 = $529
ONKYO really had a great deal that week.

for $529, I got
TX-SR805 refurb.
TX8222
and free shipping.

Can't beat that.
I am enjoying the 805!!!!

My blu-ray movies sound better with 805.

cheers

Hey man Congrats on the purchase. Onkyo has some GREAT products. I have the same receiver with Infinity speakers all around. It's a beast!! Just wish it had more HDMI inputs. I am still unable to get 1080p/24hz (im not even sure what it does) to work with my ps3, have you been able to get it to work?

You have to check your tv to see if it accept 24fps

Congrats on the great deal. I've been regularly checking the ShopOnkyo site looking for a deal on that receiver.

Right now I have the 804, and I'm a little miffed @ Onkyo because of the known issue between the 804 and the PS3. I'm still deciding if I want to send it off for service or just sell it outright.

Gentlemen. I started off the 5:1 analogue thread because I wanted to hang on to my non HDMI Denon receiver, and of course sort the variety of BD Players available. So much great info has gushed forward since then. In particular the undependable sound and sometime vision performance of most of the players, We are all either pioneers or guinea pigs to some extent. One thing HAS become clear and that is that if one wants the ultimate, then a good receiver and an HDMI connection is the only safe way to go. Don't depend on the players to decode sound. ..and certainly NOT if you dont want to suffer the varied foibles of analogue 5:1 sound..especially the bass issue. MHO.

What think ye all?

It is weird that the main BD player manufactuers have left the only decent decoding set ups to the amp makers. ie Onkyo for instance.

...and that is where I'm now heading. firstly into the Onkyo 605 specs where I found a review which is harshly critical of that models ability to process video.

Perhaps I am veering off the track due to surplus information. Yank me back if I'm getting lost.

Excerpt:

n terms of video performance, we weren't too impressed. The most disappointing aspect of the TX-SR605's video performance is that it either lacks or has poor 2:3 pull-down processing. This was evident with Silicon Optix's HQV test disc, as well as on Star Trek: Insurrection and Seabiscuit. Without 2:3 pull-down processing, we found film-based movies were filled with jaggies when the TX-SR605 was responsible for deinterlacing. For example, we ran our tests from the Samsung BD-P1000 to the TX-SR605 via S-Video, and then out to the Sony KDL-46S3000 using the HDMI connection. In this configuration, the opening sequence of Seabiscuit was filled with jaggies on almost every image that the camera panned on, with artifacts that would be noticeable to even those who aren't picky about video quality. Similarly, on the introduction to Star Trek: Insurrection, the boats on the riverside clearly had jaggies instead of being represented by a smooth line.

We also noticed that the TX-SR605 was softening the resolution of images that it deinterlaced; this was confirmed on the HQV test disc as well. In areas where there should have been detail, there was just a solid color. On the other hand, the TX-SR605 did a very good job with several other tests on the HQV test suite, including tests with a rotating white line, three pivoting fingers, and footage of a waving flag.

While the video performance of the TX-SR605 was disappointing, in our experience subpar video processing by AV receivers is common. We've mentioned it in reviews of the Sony STR-DA5200ES, the Yamaha RX-V1700, and the Pioneer VSX-82TXS. The irony is that the more receivers take advantage of the single-cable HDMI convenience, the more important proper video processing becomes.

Basically, that's saying that you should trust an upscaling DVD player to make a 480i signal into 720p as it has dedicated processors. The dedicated processors on a receiver are geared towards sound, so let the receiver do what it is designed to do. Let the BD players and PS3's do what they are designed to do (play movies and upscale video signals).

Seems like a pretty fair statement to me.

OP, congrats on the 805!

I notice you're using the Onkyo 605. Do you have the probs that they have cited in the review... ? and why would they go from the BD player via S video? strange..I'm looking for reassurance re the Onkyos sound AND vision abilities..I can then choose a BD player on which I'm not dependent for decoding. Although are you saying that even with an HDMI connection one can choose either BD Player or AV receiver decoding of vision?

just to make it clear what we're talking about. Many companies claim their receiver upconverts signals to pass through different signal types. This is not upconversion, just conversion. i.e. An S-video input, can be output through component or HDMI, and a component input can be output through HDMI. Almost all receivers do this nowadays.

A true upconversion uses smoothing and all kinds of things I frankly don't understand to take a 480 signal and send out at 720 or 1080. It's important to remember that no matter what, with upconverting, the source is still 480 so it will never look as good as a native 1080 signal. It will still look better than the original source.

I have had no issues whatsoever with heat issues or anything else. My 605 is the venter of my home theater and is on all the time. To get the upconverting feature turned on with the 605 you have to go through a "secret" menu, and this is the second form mentioned above. I think its a listed menu item on the 705 and 805. From talking with people it's a 50/50 scenerio, either they love it, or hate it.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ht=secret+menu

Post 6 in the above link has the directions on how to do this and some commentary from members on its effectiveness. I haven't turned on the upconverting feature in the receiver.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=32961

Some good commentary in the above link about receiver vs. player decoding of sound (from our Audio insider Sir Terrance).

I still watch some SD movies, but I let the PS3 do the upconverting, it does a really good job. Again, it's made for graphics and display so its dedicated processors will do a better job than the receiver. PM me if you have more questions, I'm happy to answer them! I'll even try out the secret menu if you'd like..

Slec Thanks for your response..and your offer of more assistance. I'll take you up on that when I can express what I want to do a little better. I'm getting more informed every time I open the forum.

Playing all forms of BD disc vision and sound is the target. Up converting to HD for the HD TV screen from standard DVD is a bonus but absolutely desirable and expected. And doing the same with the cable content would also be a bonus.

It would seem however that selecting a BR Player which has on board video upconversion (up to 1080 i or p) and at the very least will read and deliver ALL the sound codecs.. the main three (Dolby+, Dolby TRue and DTS Master) and feeding it all via HDMI to a good audio decoder/amplifier (Onkyo 605) is the all encompassing, safest, most dependable and hassle free way to go.

Right? Thanks again. Denzil

No worries, we're all here to learn and help out.

This section Edited out:

BD output is 1080p so any decent receiver will pass this signal through without needing to touch it. The 605 is one of many that will do this. When looking for a player, you want to mate them up so make sure you can get them all. Some may have to be internally decoded, others passed through bitstream to the receiver for decoding. The main thing is that all of the HD codecs are decoded one way, the other way, or some combination of the two.

IMO, to tell the difference between receiver decoding and BD player decoding, you'd need one of the audiophile receivers ($2000+), not the 605, 705, and maybe even the 805. Any 805 owners care to comment? That doesn't mean they aren't incredible units...just that some subtlety is lost.
