Default Sony to drop player prices to $399 for Christmas.

Quote:
Sony Corp.’s Blu-ray DVD player will drop 20 percent or more in price this holiday season, the head of the company’s consumer electronics division said.
The price for the high-definition movie player, which produces sharper images than traditional DVD machines, will decline to less than $400 from $499.99 now, Stan Glasgow, president of Sony Electronics, said Thursday. The Sony player and HD DVD, backed by Toshiba Corp., are vying to be the new home-entertainment standard.

Sony sales reps had orginally said that black friday price would be 299. Not sure why the change of heart.

And hopefully that's just the SRP, with further reductions available at retail points.

Neat, neat, neat.

He also said some Sony BD players will be FW updated to Profile 1.1. Don't know if this means the PS3 or not.

Quote:
He added, “1.1 is a set of features. Step-by-step we will be adding features and have to work with the studios” which can add plenty of features to a disc. Glasgow added that certain existing Blu-ray decks could be “upgraded with firmware” via the Net to have some 1.1 features.

Default Sony to offer the $ 399.00 Blu-Ray Player

Ok, spread the word around the Forum to all those whining about Sony's pricing that their wish is too come true. Hmmm . . . Let's see if this will be a discount on the BDP-S300. Still the best investment will be the Panasonic, for an additional $ 100.00 . Don't buy too early, the fun is just beginning. I'm willing to bet that the Panasonic will be selling for $ 429.00 or less by Christmas eve . Worth the wait in my opinion [Jim]

Default Time for a reality check

This may surprize some here - but there are products that offer superior performance, features and functionality that will cost a little bit more to enjoy over other products. There are some realities you must wake up too, like your not going to see Baskin-Robins Ice Cream at your grocery store price, why? . . . . quality ingredients cost more to achieve that wonderful experience. Negoiate well, wait on the season of sales, but be prepared to pay for quality, if you expect quality! [Jim]

Well put Jim. But for a lot of supporters, a player under $400 is just what they've been waiting for. And fortunately for them, the manufacturers agree with you: there are only quality Blu-ray players on the market, all with 1080p minimum, which will be more than enough for many, many new adopters. The nice thing about it is that when these people do eventually get a HDTV that makes full use of 1080p, their player will be ready for the challenge. The prices were going to come down sooner or later, as newer formats (1.1) are released, and more players enter the market. It's been a free-market reality for years.

So let's just rejoice that the prices of THE ultimate home theater experience is dropping, and becoming more and more affordable for everyone.

Spikes,

We have the same equipment. Good for you. Excellent products! and Yes my BDP-S1 is current. Waiting and hoping a firware update will provide dts-HD Master, either decoding or pass-thru via HDMI to my Sony STRDA-5300ES. IF the BDP-S1 won't do that, I'm ready to buy the Panasonic DMP-BD30 when it appears. [Jim]
