I wrote the piece (below) originally for High-Def.Org Magazine. It concerns the high-definition DVD format war High-Def.Org is a printed monthly magazine read by 20,000 professionals working in television and motion pictures.

that just says it all does it..20,000 professionals working in television and motion pictures.... ..and also

Wal-Mart Secret Sale too Secret?

Posted on Fri, 2 Nov 2007 09:24:27 CDT | by Shane McGlaun
Yesterday we talked about the Wal-Mart secret sale with the $99 Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player. I went up to the local Wal-Mart expecting to take some mocking photos of the people waiting in line for the sale items.

Not only were there no lines, but my local Wal-Mart hadn’t sold but two of them. In total, my local store had about 20 of the Toshiba HD-A2 players available. I would expect that is probably about the maximum amount most Wal-Mart stores will have.

If you want one of these HD DVD players and assumed the lines would be too long, if my local Wal-Mart is any indication the secret sale may have been too secret. Some of the on sale items didn’t even have the sale prices listed, like the Power Wheels Nascar ride-on my son wanted for Christmas. It may not be too late to get your hands on the HD DVD player deal of the season.

There are many reports saying how walmarts (such as mine) sold out of the hddud players and acer laptops within minutes of opening this morning.

if the price goes back to normal soon, couldn't you just buy one and return without a reciept after the deal is over?....

something that just crossed my mind and this is something I know walmart is known to do when you don't have a receipt....

An independent article which hopefully should put to rest questions of "yields" for Blu-ray.

Quote:
The one Blu-ray machine I saw working as forming and stamping out 18,000 finished BD copies per day with a 16,000 copy good yield. It took minimal human attention to create this massive stack of $1.50 to $2.00 each disks. The defects were caused, said the plant manager, James Schumacher, from impurities in the raw materials and are not an inherent flaw in the machinery or its design. He explained that these raw materials are not yet purchased in large enough quantities to be refined and commoditized
Also this little bit was telling as well....

Quote:
The Spokane Company is prepared to convert their HD DVD making equipment to standard DVDs once Blu-ray is a clear consumer choice, or as orders dictate.
If I was a petty person I would bring up the suggestion of "let's bring up the topic of HD-DVD yields" but as this is a Blu-ray forum and I have no real desire to discuss the production details of a format whose entire current key to success is dumping old unsold inventory.

So some already dud users wanted a 2nd player to play their "toy" format on. So what? What happens AFTER the sale for people new to hd-dvd?

1) No one wants to buy any more dud players at regular price
2) People get pissed when they see how much dud movies cost
3) They get REALLY pissed when they see all the Blu-ray movies that AREN'T availble on dud OR they buy a Blu movie only to find out it WON'T play on their cheap ass player.

All Toshiba did was waste money getting the #3 point known to more people.

I agree dude! And with the low price tag, hopefully they won't be so broke as to cut their losses and pick up their friendly neighborhood Blu-ray player along with some of our many bodacious movies! Excellent!

Whoa, I just went all Bill and Ted there for a second.

I'm glad more people are understanding that:
- We need just one format
- Blu-ray is the best
- The consumer must take a side, neutrality will get us nowhere
