Default BD-Java

Okay, this was the only category I can post this thread to since I'm a new member. But mods, feel free to move it if necessary.

I've been dabbling in J2ME (now Java ME) since the beginning, and I've spent a bit of time playing with MHP, including getting a couple Xlets to compile and run with the emulator. But as far as BD-J, I'm a Newbie for sure as it includes many other API's and leaves irrelevant stuff out (like GEM versus MHP?).

To me one of the #1 things that sets Blu-ray apart from HD DVD is that Blu-ray's potential for interactivity and features is limitless. We can do interactive stuff that people haven't even dreamed of yet in the future with movies. So as the total nerd that I am, I'm appealing to other nerds here that would like to share knowledge and play with this stuff just for the fun of it. Since a lot of people aren't experts at this currently, I imagine this niche has the potential to create a few lucrative jobs with major studios if you're into that also.

So mods, what are the chances we could have a dedicated section of the forum for BD-Java? We could share exciting code!

Well, I am not a nerdy type of person, but I do tend to like all things technical and electric. Also, I would have to agree with you regarding the BDA choosing BD-J. I did read the short, but informative white paper on BD-J. It was a good read, and not to mention that I truly believe this is the main reason that the BDA didn't want to use Microsoft's HDi or iHD, whichever one it is. The main fact is that it has the possibility to do what we haven't imagined yet. And that's a thing that I can get excited about. Now, the term, "Beyound High Definition" means something.

Anyway, I too hope the we can get together and discuss the intricasies of this new and innovative techology. I would love to join in on that anytime.

Thanks for your foresight in suggesting this topic for discussion.

Rob

Sun actually has not only a BD-J specific tutorial but forums for support

There's also a book coming out on it really soon, but it's about $100

Well for members who don't know what BD-Java is, this site contains some high-level presentations: http://www.blueboard.com/bluray/

I find it interesting where it says: "On the basis of the presence of Java, Forrester Research in November 2005 noted that Blu-ray would most probably win the format war with Toshiba."

BD-Java is unfortunately a double-edged sward in that authoring is initially going to take more time with the added complexity until hgiher level tools and utilities are developed that take advantage of the capabilities offered by the language/API. And I don't mean using Sonic to create simple menu systems :P

Titles of like "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" haven't even begun to scratch the surface of what BD-J can do. I rather like the fact that Blu-ray isn't considered a "finished" technology. Finished technology is dead-end technology since there is no room for feature improvement or growth. Flexibility and interoperability are important aspects of consumer solutions, while not attempting to lock 3rd party hardware providers into pairing YOUR operating system with YOUR proprietary software ... *cough* Microsoft *cough*.
