If you are talking about Final Standard Profile (aka Profile 1.1)... that is mandatory for *new* Blu-Ray players released after October 31, 2007. The majority of standalone BD players can't be upgraded to this, as most are missing bits of hardware (like a secondary video processor for true "PIP.") It's likely Sony will update their PS3 to FSP.
"BD Live" is something else: it will require Ethernet ports with Internet connectivity and more memory. As before, current standalones don't have these bits. "BD Live" will always be optional to the manufacturer of the player, unlike FSP. No titles have been released that use FSP/1.1 or BD Live functionality... and none have yet been announced. (Which makes sense, since nothing can play them today!) We've only had a few people guessing some future titles announced with "PIP" video commentary (like "Hairspray") will be be FSP with 'real' PIP, unlike Crank and The Descent. In my opinion, it is unlikely. Last edited by sonicbox; 09-26-2007 at 10:07 PM. |

BD-J is available in all players today and many movies use it if not most. Players announced after Oct. 31 must have a secondary video codec and atleast 256MB of memory to meet the mandatory requirements of profile 1.1. They will meet the requirements of Profile 2.0 or BD-Live if they also have atleast 1GB memory and a network connection.
Some announced movies might use the secondary videocodec, Resident Evil and Rush Hour seams to be two titles. No title does this today because no player needs to be able to play PiP. The Playstation 3 should and are believed to be able to meet the requirements of both Profile 1.1 and Profile 2.0 after firmware upgrade. |
