Question I saw Gladiators on DVD for the first time, and...

I saw Gladiators on BD for the first time on display on some store, it was the samsung BD player and it was displayed on some philips LCD screen(around 40") and i must say i was extremely dissapointed, if it wasn't for the BD player sitting under the screen, i would have thought it's running off a standard DVD player.

I'm a big BD supporter, and i would like to know is Gladiators is one of the moviews running on MPEG2 an not VC1? i mean that would be the only reason i could think of that would make the picture quality like standard DVD quality.

so what do you guys think? and is Gladiators is an MPEG2 or VC1 movie?

thanks!

I bet he means Gladiator. And it was probably Best Buy. One of the demo's on Best Buy's Interactive DVD is a scene from Gladiator. This was not a Blu Ray Disc, if this was the case.

Gladiator is by Dreamworks, which has not announced support for either format yet.

Gladiator on High Def would look something like this or better.

(I can sharpen that till it looks wicked sharp and nicer than the 35mm print I saw on theaters.)

LOL! Nevermind the fact that MPEG2 titles can match VC-1 in quality.

Gosh, sometimes I wonder how peaceful the home theater community would be today, if only the Justice Department had split up Microsoft.

oops yah i mean Gladiator. i see so it was running of a DVD on the samsung BD player...no wonder it didn't look any special. but it also puzzles me that they're demo-ing a BD with a DVD! i mean how are you supposed to educate people or attract customers.

and last, it's not Best Buy, it's a store in Paris France called "Fnac"

Perhaps they don't have any BD's in France yet.

Please keep us informed about French movies and BD releases

Cheers!

I see 2 problems here. The first would be the TV. Philips 40" is to small to notice that much of a difference, it is only a 720p tv as well. To be nice aout it there are alot better tvs out there.
the second problem leads back to the MPEG2 vs. VC1. Mpeg2 IMO is a lot better of a codec than VC1. This leads to another problem of people judging the codec and not the movie it's self. MPEG2 Has some real gems for PQ out right now, it has its leamons to. However if you take all of the Mpeg2 leamons vs the good ones, you will have a better % of good to bad than if you took all of the good VC1 to the bad VC1. How many MPEG2 titles are out now a few million. How many VC1, a couple hundred at best.

yah i hate philips products in general.

i was just under the impression that VC1 was better since all HD-DVD movies looked better when it first came out since they were VC1, while BD were MPEG2.

anyways, i'll check back at the store tomorrow, i'll double check that indeed it was a DVD running on a BD player.

btw, does the samsung player upconvert DVDs?

yes, the sammy does upconvert DVD's

as far as vc-1 vs mpeg2, do a search on the boards. you'll see a lot of discussion regarding them as well as some of the drawbacks of each

Agreed 100%. That topic is getting a little old and over done.

ok so i went back today to check on the same BD display. this time they had "SWAT" playing, and again it looked like DVD, i was so curiouse to know wheather it's DVD or BD disc in there, so i ejected the tray and to my shock it was a BD!!! i was speechless, and even my wife said i dont see what's so special about BD if the quality is like that. I didn't know how to explain this, so i was thinking, could it be that the BD player was set to 480i/p instead of HD? maybe the guy that set it up forgot adjust the HD settings?

That and/or it's on a Samsung player that hasn't had its firmware updated, which means a way over done noise reduction issue...which would explain exactly why you were understandably underwhelmed by the picture quality results.

SWAT is an excellent disc.

Even before I updated my Samsung player, I thought S.W.A.T. looked really good. I'll have to pop it in again to see if there's any improvement.

Not trying to be a dick. I didnt realize gladiator was out/announced for blu ray.

I noticed that on the samsung in BB near me they have an option on the demo disc to check out some movies. They previewed Pirates of the Carribean and it looked like crap. They still need to work on that one.

Ok It sounds like the guy who set this BD player up is riding the blue bus to work. SWAT was amazing on BD. So the first problem I see is the TV but I aready said that. If you have a bad tv the BD is going to look bad. Now we get to the other problem, BB doesn't carry phillips, CC doesn't carry phillips, and walmart doesn't carry the BDP1000. So were did you see this? I am not picking on you or calling you a liar but I would like to know the name of the store with the display.
