Default 40GB PS3 quieter

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but apparently the 40GB PS3 has dropped the noise from 36dB to 30dB. This is the result of lower power requirements:

I have read this myself in a number of articles. Not bad. I have a 60gb and have never experienced an issue with the noise. If mine was any more quiet I wouldn't be able to hear it with my ear right next to it. Nice work Sony!

Agreed. With my 60 gig I couldn't hear it even if the sound was turned down.

Add me to the list of people with a 60gb that makes no noise. Even during completely silent parts of a movie I don't hear it.

i'm one of the unlucky souls to have a "loud" 60g PS3. not loud really, but i can easily hear fan noise during quieter scenes. this news i keep hearing about the new 40g being quieter makes me want to maybe get a second PS3....

I need to see what you guys are doing differently. I have gone through four PS3s (three 60s and an 80) and I can hear the high-speed fan during BD playback on all of them. I've placed it vertical and horizontal and not noticed any difference at all. It's driving me crazy because I keep reading about people who have no noise at all, and I keep getting these jet engines. Even my friend got a quiet 60 on his first try.

Is it because I'm running it at 1080p/24 with all audio set to PCM over HDMI, while my friend has it set to 720p and bitstream audio over optical?

I've never heard my fan on my PS3. It must be working though

I went through 3 60s before I got a "good" 80. I also tried different positions and different settings on all of them. My BD playback has always been good, but some PS3 demos and upscaling standard DVD's always sent the fan into it's 3rd speed, which is very loud. My 80 has been much better so far, but it does go into the fans 2nd speed a lot, which is fine with me as long as the 3rd speed doesn't start kicking in. I've never heard the 1080p/24 and audio options making a difference, but if they do I would like to know.

Those of you with loud fan noise?

Is it in a properly ventilated area? Or is it closed up in a case/cabinet, etc.

All of mine were horizontal, on a glass shelf, in my TV stand, with a lot of space on all sides. I don't think that was an issue with mine since I went through 3 and got a "good" one on the fourth try. I can't explain it, but I know I almost gave up on the PS3.

Never had a problem with my 360 either

Curious - what are your ambient (for those that don't know what that word means - your average room temperature at any given time) room temperatures everyone?

Was the front enclosed or open?

Maybe you were just unlucky. That's really odd. One of the things my xbox 360 owning friends mention is how quiet the Ps3 is compared to their vacuum consoles.

They were all very open in the front. My entire HT setup is in a cut-out in the wall, so it is warmer in that area than the rest of the room, but it is a big "hole" in the wall so there is a lot of space and good ventilation. I live in AZ, so it is still hot here, but I keep the AC at 76-78. Like I said, I kept all PS3's in the same area with the same settings, and it wasn't til I got the 80 (I went to a different BB for that one) that I got one I was happy with. I am in love with my PS3, but am always in fear of the 3rd fan speed when it is on, I am definately paranoid of that due to my first 3 60's. With the 80gb, so far, so good, thankfully.

I think I was unlucky. All 3 came from the same BB, but when I went to a different BB, I got one I was happy with.

My 60GB in a cabinet with the front open and about 3" on the sides would hit 2nd fan speed occasionally BD's and more often upscaling DVD's - 3rd fan came on and off for Folding@Home....

..putting it free standing on end beside the T.V - have yet to hear the 2nd fan speed even with Folding@Home.

Is it the consensus, that vertical placment is better for the PS3?
