I have a blu ray of Beauty and the Beast that has had the color timings significantly altered from the theatrical release. I mean ... really really altered to the point of almost resembling a Saturday Morning Cartoon.
The question is ... Is this new color the only transfer ever released on Blu Ray ? Thanks ! The disc I have is a travesty ... no more subtle tone ... only bright garish bs. |

Unfortunately yes. This travesty of a restoration is the only version of the film on Bluray, and on DVD. The only more accurate to the theatrical release colors are the VHS and LD. It's a real pity because BATB is my favourite animation film of all time, and my second favourite film of all time! The 3D may be a bit differnet than the 2d, but it's on the same road of colors.. Here you can see a discussion on the subject in various posts. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...=204278&page=9 and here's some screenshot comparisons between VHS, LD, 2D and 3D Bluray (notice how the early bright morning has become a late afternoon): ![]() Last edited by filmmusic; 09-17-2014 at 11:27 PM. |

I think the BD looks considerably better, with richer colors and far better contrast. What is a labelled as the LD looks bleached out and the VHS has a pink tinge to it. The 3D Blu-ray of course has to be brighter to make up for the glasses.

And a priority of a studio should be to release the original first, and then give as a supplement the changed version for people who like cheap-looking animation better! The original color palette of BATB was a masterpiece. It was melancholic, with not oversaturated colors, and shadows, mimicing renaissance paintings. Now, it's become a circus fest for the people of 21st century that like animation over-colorful! If the same thing had happened to a live action Bluray, there would be a public outrcry! I don't understand why don't people care about this Bluray. I guess they're used to the computer animation colorful palettes. Eg. Arachnophophia was re-released with correct colors for much less errors (the levels of black that was like gray). Also, The French connection was re-released. The colors were changed deliberately, and this is shown by the loss of shadows in the Be our Guest scene I posted above,* and that is unforgivable! *I say that, because many are saying that the Bluray presents the original accurate colors, and VHS and LD present wrong colors due to the limits of the medium. But, if the BLuray colors are accurate, the limits of VHS and LD couldn't "create" shadows in eg. the Be our Guest scene. Therefore it is evident, that the colors were changed! Not to mention all the publicity stills, etc. of that time, that present the VHS, LD colors. And of course the colors of the theatrical version that I saw in the theaters and loved. Disney have put out some subpar transfers of their animation classics, but this isn't one of them. Last edited by Todd Tomorrow; 09-17-2014 at 11:53 PM. |

Really?
Do you remember the sky in Belle being orange/yellow like that? I got the VHS just a couple of weeks after I saw the film in the theater and it was EXACTLY like what i had seen! By the way, the still i posted above from Be our Guest is a film still or maybe coming from a cell or something and not an LD or VHS screenshot, and it shows how the colors were! You can't deny that the colors were changed, and this is evident from the bluray itself. If you see the work in progress film (and i think it opens in a little window along with the film, i don't have the Bluray), it shows the original colors from a 35mm transfer with grain, albeit in the darker spectrum, but you see that it was a different color palette. I have the Blu-Ray, and I think it looks and sounds phenomenal. I saw this movie so many times growing up, and had to memorize all the songs for school at that age (junior-high choir). Its my favorite entry in the Disney Renaissance, and I couldn't be happier with how this release turned out.

Wrong. Goto YouTube there is a video there comparing the restoration to the original colors. The original has a MUCH more artistic use of colors. Especially in the skin tones . The restoration looks like a Saturday morning cartoon. If you can't see that I can't help you. Last edited by mdonovan; 09-18-2014 at 03:10 AM. |

The only thing that looked odd to me on the bluray was the way the light shining through windows seemed to be a much less impressive effect than it was in the theater/on the VHS, but yeah, those screen caps make it all look weird. I don't think the bluray looks bad exactly, but it was an odd artistic choice.
