Default Dracula fails to impress highdefdigest

I read this a little bit ago. I don't know sometimes Bracke let's alot of his own personal views get in the way of his reviews. I sometimes cringe at what horrible things he has to say about some of my favorite movies. I thought they had spent alot of time on this transfer. Regardless I am still buying it.

The PQ got 2 and a 1/2 stars which unfortunately makes it rate in the bottom 12 or so of the hundreds of BD's reviewed yet. I'm sure it can't be THAT bad, maybe just in comparison to expectations. Bracke says surprisingly there are dirt and blemishes on the print, (IIRC, the Superbit DVD had lots of those as well...) Is Bracke just way off..? I remember the film being slightly soft style-wise in many scenes in the theater but this just sounds like they used a several year old master and did virtually no work.

One of my faves and I'm bummed if it really if it's this disappointing.
+1
please any comments about this would be appreciated as I have the superbit version but was looking forward to some excellent sound and at least very good video. As I am no longer "made of money"(stay at home dad) I would like to know if this represents a good enough difference in quality to warrant a purchase. Thanks.

The movie's so damn dark that doesn't surprise me. Like whenever I watch The Fountain, which also has a lot of dark scenes. Those are always the poorest PQ scenes.

It can be done right. I've raved about the movie The Descent before --one dark film, and it looks excellent.

I'll still be buying this, I love the movie and it'll still be a visual upgrade from the dvd.

paidgeek said a while ago that the master was a bit soft. Not sure if this is how it was filmed or not. Another person with the disc has said/agreed it was a little soft, but that it was a huge upgrade over the DVD. We have no reason to believe Sony dropped the ball here as all of their releases over the past year or so have been stellar. Maybe this is the best the movie can look? You cannot make something look better than it is originally.

A must buy for me; had it on order for a long time...

If the final film master is made from several generations (optical printing), then it will lose some resolution. That is one reason some low budget films can look quite good because the print is only one or two generation(s) removed from the film originals. They do not have the budget for all the optical printing.

When will blu-ray.com review the disc? I am curious if they will find similar issues as hidefdigest.com. I will buy it regardless since I love the movie and sold my Superbit version when the BD release date came out.

Coppola wanted to emulate the look of early film, using "old school" compositions and effects techniques combined with what was then state of the art.

Again "HDD" is faulting something for looking exactly as it should.

Bracke would fault a restored Mona Lisa for being too "brownish & faded".

Definatly a let down this late in Blu's game and a 50 gig to boot should have scored a lot better.

I've read revies here and there about Dracula...and to some extent I'm taking it with a grain of salt. I mean, just about the PQ and such regarding Goodfellas; I only have 1080i and to me it still a helluva lot better than the previous SD versions. The grain wasn't too terrible and the colors were good. I mean overall, it looked damn fine to me. Maybe I'm crazy, but that's my opinion. I don't consider myself a novice when it comes to home video, so I know what to look for. Ah well, it'll be nice to get Dracula, and the extras sound good. I own the Criterion LD and that had some great bonuses and haven't really watched it in quite a long time, so I'm psyched.

i hear you 101%. i never really did like hi-def digest's reviews. i feel they are a bit bias and not always accurate. i'll probably still pick this up when it's released.

I wouldn't worry too much after one review, especially from Bracke who has made several questionable calls in the past.

Its a all time favorite for me. I will be picking it up regardless. If it was any one but sony or disney I might be concerned that such a review is true.

Wow. I canceled this pre-order from Amazon but now I wonder if that was the right call. I have questioned PB's comments and scores before but I hate doing what I would call, a blind buy, at least as far as PQ/AQ are concerned. If anyone runs across other reviews please post the links here.

I'm definitely buying it. I don't agree with quite a few of their reviews and I don't have the movie on DVD.

It's sad that people invest that much in the reviews from a single site. He's like the Ebert of hi-def at this point. I wonder how badly sales will be affected from his opinion alone.

I love this movie! I put it on pre-order with Amazon as soon as I saw it was available for pre-order..

I personally believe some of the reviews done by this guy are tainted by whether or not he likes the movie itself. Doesn't matter anyway - it is destined for my blu-ray collection.
