matty... I would try google and type in SR705 Review... you should find plenty. I would check Amazon, Circuit City's website (they both have user reviews). My guess is it's a pretty sweet receiver. I've been digging around too and I'm probably gonna grab the 605 (I only have about 400 bucks to spend so I'm leaning towards that one). Anyway, have a nice day.

I think what he really wanted was somebody's opinion on this forum who may own this particular receiver.

What exactly do you want to know? I'm not an audiophile or anything but I do own this receiver and have it connected to a 5.1 set of Orb Audio Mod2 speakers. It drives gives plenty of power, the HDMI switching is very fast and has the 705 is unique (compared to the 605) in its ability to do THX and all the other surround sound formats. I've only had it about three weeks now so I haven't freally tinkered with the surround settings for each source (i.e. scientific atlanta dvr, playstation 3, ibm t60p) but the 705 does its job, and does it well. After reprogramming my Harmony Remote, the TV/receiver turn on in about 2 seconds whereas before it would always take me leaving the remote pointed at the home theatre for about 5-6 seconds which the TV turned on, changed source, and then set my stereo receiver source.

The only things cavaets you should be aware of are (and I quote from the official AVS Forum post):

Quote:
1. They will "up-convert" analog video IN to HDMI OUT. In fact, they will also convert composite and s-video to component OUT.
2. They will "up-scale" analog video to a maximum 720p for component OUT or HDMI OUT. There never has been a claim that they would scale to 1080i or 1080p. In fact, they will "down-convert" 1080i to 720p.
3. They will "pass-through" video untouched if the OUT matches the IN... e.g., HDMI IN = HDMI OUT, s-video IN = s-video OUT.
Oh yea, I also have XM Radio hooked up to the receiver. As with all Onkyo receivers, switching among presets and channels is seamless and from what I've read, the receiver can decode DTS on certain stations. Again, I'm not an audiophile if it isn't already apparant

All I care about is being able to see the station/channel/artist/song and switching among stations which it does with ease.

Hi, thanks for that info. so are you saying about the hdmi switching that it works well? all i care about is how it works and sounds with watching blu ray movies and HD sat receivers? i know you may not have this set up, but was curious on if i am using hdmi video switching, does it would well with all the decoding for the movies? so when you switch from say cable/sat to blu ray dvd does it switch the audio for you and the video source?

just want to make sure that the 1080p signal will transfer through the receiver to the tv for the best quality picture or should i connect direct from BD player to the tv for best signal? and the same for the sat receiver?

The optimal setup is to have everything connected via HDMI both to and from the receiver. With all HDMI, if you send a 1080p source in you'll get a 1080p source out. The same is true if you are inputting via component and outputting via component but NOT true if you are inputting via component and outputting via HDMI. In that special case, you will only get 720p as the receiver will downconvert the analog signal to to 720p and feed that out. If you want analog upconverting to 1080p you've got to fork over about $1200-$1500 for the 905 I think it is.

Yes, there is audio switching no matter what connection you use and yes, as far as I can tell it plays all the surround sound formats as long as you enable bitstream in the PS3. There is a two page matrix in the manual identifying the right surround sound format based on the source and speaker # so if you need specifics, grab a copy of the manual.

Hope this helps.

Default Onkyo TX-SR975

I recently upgraded my system (like 3 weeks ago) including a 975. I'd be happy to post my impressions if anyone is interested.

Thumbs up

I have the 705 and it replaced a Sony ES, I even like it better than my Yamaha. I have it connected via HDMI and everything is as advertised
let me know if you have specific questions.

No problem. Upscaling is different than upconversion. The Onkyo TX-SR705 does not do upscaling, just upconverting. The TX-SR905 does upscaling (i.e. taking a 480i signal and changing it to 1080p) but you pay a premium and I personally don't think it is worth it as SD-TV upscaled to 1080p is still going to look like crap.

Just keep in mind, if you connect HDMI all away around the signal passes through unchanged--period, end of story. If you pass in 1080i or 1080p you will get 1080i or 1080p out. The only issue is when you are outputting via HDMI and have a component input going in. In this case, your signal will actually be downconverted to 720p because component is analog. Truth be told, there's very little difference between 1080i and 720p but it is something to be aware of.

Just do like I do and connect HDMI all around and you won't have any issues.

Talking Onkyo Tx-sr875 Upscaling

There was a guy on here a few weeks back (i can't find his posting) where he stated that he bought the 875 onkyo (i just got mine today, it finally arrived along with klipsh sinergy series quintet 2 5.1 surround speakers, 2 hdmi second series/second category hdmi cables, 16 gauge monster wire. NOw he said he turned OFF the PS3 DVD UPSCALER so that the scaling can be done through the 875 for 1080P. I would like to know if he or does anyone know if only the DVD UPSCALER should be off or should i turn off the PS3's PS2's upscaler or should i turn off the upscaler that upscales the games as well and if so, will that cause the old ps2 games to upscale as close to 1080p as possible? I remember him saying he turned off the ps3 dvd upscaler but he didn't say anything about the video games upscaler which i saw that was separate. CAn anyone help with that? Also, how can i get the best possible blu ray sound? I'm using the klipsch quintet 2's 5.1 with subwoofer with the onkyo 875, the ps3, hdmi category 2. PLEASE TELL ME HOW CAN I GET THE DOLBLY TRUE OR WHATEVER, JUST THE BEST SOUND.

PLEASE ANSWER THESE 2 QUESTIONS THANKS

It is soooo superior to my old Sony it is embarassing, Everything is connected thru the HDMI and works well, My eyes are old, but I see no difference between going thru the amp and direct. Made a nice clean installation

A question for those of you who own any of the Onkyo receivers, but for my personal interest I would prefer info on the 705. Do you have a clicking sound when you change audio settings say from one AUX setting to another? I ask because others have reported it and am wondering if any user here has experienced it. Thanks.
