Default studios need to incentivize blu-ray (better commercials, earlier release, extras)

isn't it time studios create incentives for j6p to look into blu-ray?

codecs, bitrates, etc are things enthusiasts care about and will buy into, but i think it's time studios go after the j6p in order to make the format really take off.

for example, look at the tv commericals typically shown for new releases. they almost always have same phrase:

"buy it this tuesday on dvd and blu-ray"

that doesn't register anything special about blu-ray. in fact they used the same format when psp movies were still around:

"buy it this tuesday on dvd and psp"

the least they could do is devote the last 3 seconds of the commercial to blu-ray:

"experience this movie in high definition only on blu-ray" (flash BD logo)

then people would have some sense of it, but the way it is now a lot of people don't know what it means and don't care to find out. next time you're with people who aren't especially into hdm (j6p) and a movie commercial comes on, ask them what the blu-ray thing at the end means.

the other big thing they could do is start releasing movies on blu-ray 2 weeks earlier than sd-dvd. this would definitely cause people to look into what blu-ray is.

lastly they could advertise extras only found on blu-ray. "upgrade to the blu-ray version and get exclusive commentary/behind-the-scenes/etc"

i think these are the sorts of things we should expect bda and studios to do instead of just cutting player prices

I like it alot the comercial idea, and the extra extra's I don't think they'll release the BD version weeks or even days earlier, best we can hope for is same day as DVD...

I remember back in the day they would advertise DVD on VHS tapes, I have no idea if this is being done for BD, as I don't buy DVD discs. the sooner we get Profile 2.0 players out the better, then we can show the standalones as well as the PS3 for having the same functionality, expanding BD and stopping the HD-DVD fanboys from saying that 1. they have more feature VIA PiP and web functionality and 2. no more talking of BD is only for the PS3 crap. the less nonsense the HD-DVD fanboys can speak about BD, the better.

bda marketing really needs to improve

aside from things i first mentioned, more things that can be done

ps3 owners and potential buyers not realizing it can play blu-ray movies is a big problem:

1) a short 1 minute video explaining this feature should be pre-loaded on ps3 hard drive and plays on first boot.

2) a big sticker should be placed on front of the ps3 box with blue writing:

"playstation 3 can also play blu-ray movies (BD logo)"

this would help catch attention of store browsers. seeing just a BD logo along the bottom or even the spiderman3 case picture doesn't clarify the movie playback feature (does casual consumer realize it can play movies or thinks it's a game?)

cost of this stuff? almost free, yet it's not being done

I agree. I've mentioned in the past that I thought something like, "Get it on DVD, or for high definition with exclusive extras, on Blu-ray disc" would likely work well.

I have noted that when the commercials for the movie (ie. POTC3) is on one of the HD channels on TV, they only showcase the blu-ray edition, not the SD edition, with all the extras the movie has on the disc, including behind the scenes, and they mention, in big letters, that the movie comes in HD PQ and SQ. Disney is very good about this.

Plus, didn't Disney put coupons for $10 off the BD in the DVD cases for this movie?

The Simpsons Movie commercials that i've seen so far really stink when it comes to marketing Blu-Ray

They don't even mention "Blu-Ray" or "High Def" in the commercials at all
The only thing they have is a very small black Blu-Ray logo at the very end of the commercial !?!?

First off, the logo should be at least twice the size and should be blue. Second, they should mention "own it on DVD and Blu-Ray" or "available on DVD and Blu-Ray".

Even better, they should have put the Blu-Ray logo on SpiderPig

I still think more can be done. Disney could care less about what version of the format they sell as long as they are hitting numbers.

They need to be more blunt about it. More persuasive. Make it seem black and white where Blu-ray is the only option. I think that most studios could care less about what format wins. If they are endorsing Blu-ray they need to pound that into the heads of consumers and make it seem they have no other hi-def option.

They do show quiet a bit of Blu-Ray commercials on the HD Channels. I remember watching a college basketball game on HDNet last weekend. It was Blu-Ray commercials galore.

What they need to do is show the commercial let say The Simpson's and at the ending for Blu-ray with the logo and Dvd with out logo.
Make a stand by saying blu first and dvd second.
