HDMI or, if not available, multichannel analogs.

Assuming your amp can decode multi-channel audio over HDMI... What model do you have?

It's with gold.

But now I read your question...
Optical shouldn't be different from HDMI. They're both digital (isn't it?).

That reciever had a HDMI input on it, however it won't decode multi-channel audio over HDMI. The HDMI inputs act as a video passthrough only. If you have a section on your amp that has multi-channel inputs you should use those. If not, then continue to use optical/digital coax connection.

The multi-channel inputs might be labeled as 5.1 input, or 5.1CH analog, or something of the nature. If you haven't found them by later, I'll check at work for you.

Yes, they are both digital, but optical doesn't have the necessary bandwidth to carry uncompressed PCM, or any of the next-gen audio formats.

A minor correction - optical does have the bandwidth to carry up to 48/24 surround and 96/24 stereo uncompressed PCM, I do it all the time. I'm pretty certain it can also get as high as 192/24 LPCM, but this is something that is not widely utilised.
