Make sure you are burning as an image onto a cd-r, if it is burnt as data it will be unreadable by the player.

I downloaded the update to computer (it was a zipped file)
Then, I found the file and clicked on it to select and open it (inside the zipped directory)
Under Windows VISTA, the free OEM version of Roxio Creator 9 opened and asked me to confirm that I wanted to burn it as an image file.
(So apparently it was recognized as an image file and correctly assumed I wanted to make a CD image on CD)
I said yes to that option and it burned the disk to CDR and ejected it in about 30 seconds.
Then, I popped it into the BDP1400 and followed the website instructions, which went exactly as stated.

The key thing is that you have to burn an IMAGE file, you can't just copy the file over to the CD. The words "IMAGE" or 'ISO IMAGE" must be part of the burning software options.

BluMonkey,

Why dont you just plug the supplied ethernet cable into your router/switch, remove any discs from the tray, and go into setup and let it update over the network? If you are really paranoid, you can just disconnect the network cable from your router after the firmware upgrade completes.

This way you dont have to worry about burning this and that in this format and blah, blah, blah.

I did this immediately after hooking my 1400 up the other Friday and it works like a charm.

It could save you some time and greif.

Never mind, I just noticed you dont have a 1400.
Maybe the 1000/1200 also has an ethernet port?

For those who are still having problem updating the 1400, try this modified instruction (in blue).

How to upgrade the BD-P1400
1. Press OPEN/CLOSE button to open the disc tray.
2. Insert the upgrade CD.
3. Press OPEN/CLOSE button to close the disc tray.
3a. Press the Power button to turn off the unit (before verifying firmware version screen comes up).
3b. Press the Power button again to turn on the unit.

4. Please wait about 6 minutes while verifying.
...

Keep in mind this warning;

Warning
The following events may interrupt the upgrade process and MAY RESULT IN PERMANENT DAMAGE TO THE UNIT WHILE UPGRADING.
1. Unplugging the power plug
2. Power outage
3. Dirt or scratches on the burned CD-R/RW disc
4. Closing or opening a disc tray during update processing

This is not anything official or what not (disclaimer!). My wife's just complaining too much about me having enough coasters to start my own AA group meeting at house. I'll probably invite all of them anyway to enjoy this marvel of high speed machine.
