Thumbs up Who wants Disney's The Black Hole on Blu-ray?

If you have read my "confession thread" then you know I just bought this movie on DVD. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=62523

After buying my blu-ray player last year I SWORE I would never buy another DVD. That I could not think of a single movie I wanted that badly. I was wrong. I waited nearly 30 years to get this one.

Disney, this 1979 visual masterpiece deserves a 30 year anniversay release for 2009. It stars Ernest Borgnine who is 94 now. Get it on blu-ray while he is still alive to give commentary.

This movie holds almost as much allure as 2001: A Space Odyssey. The viewer must muse as to the meaning of the ending, when the Maximillian robot and his maker become one. And seemingly rule over "Dante's Inferno" in hell.

DVD does not do this movie justice. Please, pull this classic from the vault and remaster it for blu-ray.

Maximilian was a great villain in the movie.

Slim Pickens did the voice of Bob - remember him? the hick, broken down robot!

Great movie. Makes me want to pick this up and add it to my collection.

I'd love this on blu-ray if it were cleaned up etc.

On the same note, I bought a brand new copy of the dvd just the other day at best buy, it was like $3. Just remembered it as a kid, loved the whole story and characters.

Okay, lets be rational. I think the movie is fun -- and the Oscar-nominated VFX and art direction are justifiably famous -- but the movie is a flat-footed mess, the very definition of guilty pleasure, and it cannot stand comparison to 2001.

That being said, the very first DVD I ever bought was The Black Hole. It was the reason I bought a DVD player. I collected all the Disney laserdiscs and a wide-screen edition of The Black Hole was never released in the states...so, when Anchor Bay released the title, in order to see it in wide-screen and to fill out my collection, I had to buy a DVD player and buy the Black Hole DVD (especially when I heard it playing in 5.1 at Dave's Video - I was sold).

So, sure, bring on The Black Hole. But long before Disney brought The Black Hole to Blu-Ray, I'd rather see 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Third Man on the Mountain, Darby O'Gill and the Little People, Pollyanna, Three Lives of Thomasina, Sword and the Rose, Story of Robin Hood and his Merrie Men, Treasure Island, Those Calloways, Old Yeller, Swiss Family Robinson, The Happiest Millionaire, Mary Poppins, Summer Magic, Family Band, Never Cry Wolf, TRON, The Journey of Natty Gann, Dick Tracy, Iron Will and even In Search of the Castaways. In fact, lets get all of those pan-and-scan only releases of the 80's and 90's films out ASAP. We can always upconvert our DVD of The Black Hole, I'm still waiting to see Natty Gann in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio. It's been over 20 years since Americans have seen that John Cusack film the way it was intended - in wide-screen. That's my #1 most-wanted right now, that and 20,000 Leagues.

Despite its obvious warts, "the Black Hole" would be a day one purchase for me (Disney Completest Syndrome). Would also agree that there are numerous live action classics far more worthy, but being equally ignored by Disney. You have to wonder what their marketing plan is regarding these older films, other than the obvious indifference and disregard for their fans desires!

Has anybody rented/purchased the HDX on Vudu and cares to elaborate on what it looks like? I saw it listed tonight in the 3 days for $3.99 section, so I rented it. I just dont have time to watch it tonight.

I watched it on Vudu. It was letterboxed and the PQ looked no different than the DVD release.

I've heard that the reason Disney has not released this on bluray and why plans for a Joseph Kosinski helmed remake got scrapped is because they are afraid of it and see it as a failure They feel that the original was far too cerebral for audiences and was too dark for children. This movie creeped me out as a kid and that's precisely why I still love it as an adult. The chances of Disney bringing this out of the vault anytime soon are very slim. They'd rather bury it than revitalize it because they don't need it now that they have Star Wars and Marvel.

Okay Disney, you've had your fun and tease, now, bring this, restored and properly scanned, to blu-ray fast.
Please note, that us fans are not demanding an 4K UHD with 18.3 crazy Atmos, or something like that, just a decent, honest good transfer

Money burns a hole in my pocket for a right & proper hi-def transfer of The Black Cauldron on bluray.

Disney, what are you waiting for?

Cool The Legend Returns.

I have been away too long. Can not believe this thread still gets replies nearly 10 years later.

I loved this movie as a kid even if I didn't understand the plot or notice the shortcomings. Would this be a really bad rewatch as an adult?

I recently came across a Hollywood Reporter review when the movie came out where the critic Arthur Knight immediate blasts the title of the movie for being racist and sexist. Even if you're brain dead about space and science, doesn't everyone know the basics like black holes and the names of the planets in our solar system? How could anyone take his review seriously after he opens with that? And who were the editors that allowed that to get through?

Disney seems to have no interest releasing some of their more older "Adult" live action films like this

Since TBC has a HD master ready to go, i'm positive a DMC release (with the usual limited availability and scalpers sellers asking 3x DMC's SRP) in the pipeline considering Disney's lack of enthusiasm in regards to physical catalog releases and their upcoming streaming paywall BS.

I need to see this one! I’ve heard it’s absolutely terrible from almost everyone that’s seen it, but I like a lot of 80’s/90’s movies people tend to shak on (hint: A Kid In King Arthur’s Court) but some of my film friends consider it a rite of passage so to speak,
