Default best way to set up this PS3 HT?

I'm pretty new to this hidef stuff and I'm looking for setup advice.

I've got a Sony XBR4 and a PS3 hooked up via HDMI currently. For xmas, I'm getting an Onkyo HT SR800 7.1Ch sound system.

The PS3 only has 1 HDMI out. How should I be hooking up this HT system for best audio quality? What audio output settings should I configure on my PS3?

it would depend on the back of your home theater receiver. I have a ps3 as well and a sony home theater i have an hdmi cable from the ps3 to the home theater receiver then theres another hmdi port that goes from the home theater receiver to my tv.So chances are your theater receiver will more then one hdmi port mine has 3 or 4 one for tv,blu ray, satelite and another i believe too.so u should just need 2 hdmi cables, but like i said it depends on what your receiver looks like.if you only have one hdmi on your receiver you can use the digital optical connection from the ps3 to the surround sound.

hope this helps(believe me i know its confusing i just bought mine)

it gets easier once you get it out of the box to be honest.

For being new to hi-def you got some pretty sweet gear with that xbr4 and ps3. Well I don't think that onkyo home theatre has an hdmi input so you would connect the ps3 to the xbr w/ hdmi and set the resolution to 1080p and turn on 24fps support as well in the ps3. Then connect an optical cable from the ps3 to the onkyo and select bitstream audio output via optical from the ps3 sound menu. Without a receiver that has an hdmi input this is the best way to connect it.

How much better is the quality if you use HDMI for the audio instead of the optical cable?

Well w/ hdmi you can get uncompressed pcm, dts hd-ma and dolby truehd which are the same thing as the original studio master. If you don't have a receiver that can handle these new audio codecs then your not gonna hear a difference between dolby digital/dts using an hdmi compared to an optical since there both digital. Hdmi just has more bandwidth.

If your receiver can handle HDMI audio, the difference between PCM and standard dolby digital is the difference between SD dvd and blu-ray IMHO!

I second this, and would recommend looking at spending a little extra $$$ to make up the difference between what you are getting and a receiver that can handle HDMI passthrough. Think of it this way. The Hi-Def audio codecs CAN ONLY BE PASSED THROUGH HDMI. If the receiver doesn't support HDMI, then it won't support any of the DTS-MA, Uncompressed Lossless PCM, or Dolby TrueHD codecs that help raise the sound quality to match the picture quality.

It is my opinion that 60% of the movie viewing experience has become completely sound based!

yeah hate to say it, but if your receiver doesn't have an HDMI-in on the back, ask for a gift receipt and get an onyko 605 , they're cheap and good!

Step up to the Onkyo SP-908. It comes with the Onkyo 605 in the box which is HDMI 1.3 and does all 3 major formats (PCM, TrueHD, DTS HD MA), comes with 7 speakers and sub, all wiring, a ipod dock and a upconverint DVD player (good for bedrooms). You can find it online for ~750-800, i would get that in a heartbeat. 2 of my buddies have the same thing and they are mind blowing awesome systems. Both are using PS3s also. Oh, and the Onkyo 605 converts anything you have to HDMI, so you just use 1 single cable to the TV and hook everything else up to the receiver, it takes care of everything for you.

A minor correction - it's a copy protection (HDCP) issue, not bandwidth. Optical or coaxical digital has more than enough bandwidth to handle 7.1 uncompressed PCM.

PS3 and Sony XBR4/W3000/V3000 sure seem to be a popular combination around here.

No, sorry it is a bandwidth issue.Coax will not handle 7.1 uncompressed.

yes get either the Onkyo 605 or 805. I have the 805, both handle the new audio codecs tho so you can't go wrong with either

Question related to this subject, I had the Onkyo THX certified system which only supports component video for HD. Can I just swap my current receiver for the Onkyo 605, 705 or 805? and if so what do I loose if they are not THX certified?

I'm assuming what I gain with an HDMI connection is greater than what I would loose on the THX side correct?

Thanks for the replies.

I'm still a student and am pretty flat broke after the TV and PS3. I splurged to get the 46" over the 40" which didn't help my cause much either

So, I'll have to hold off on upgrading the receiver and stick with optical for now. I was confused about the max 2Ch support for uncompressed via optical, and wanted to make sure I could still get 7.1 support.

By the sounds of it, bitstream output will do it, but won't be uncompressed, is this correct?

As long as your choosing a DD/DTS track and not a PCM, DTS-HD, or TrueHD track.
