Well w/ hdmi you can get uncompressed pcm, dts hd-ma and dolby truehd which are the same thing as the original studio master. If you don't have a receiver that can handle these new audio codecs then your not gonna hear a difference between dolby digital/dts using an hdmi compared to an optical since there both digital. Hdmi just has more bandwidth.
