1080i and 720p does not have a big difference on a non 1080p TV. Technically, your 1080i TV is not 1080 at all, it does not have 1080 lines of resolution, it has 720 or a little above 720 lines of resolution. I would prefer 1080i, but that is just me. Your 1080i movies will still be played at 720p, again 1080i TVs are actually 720p. The wording is all wrong, since 1080p TVs have been released; now they actually do not call 1080i TVs 1080i anymore on Best Buy papers, now they are called 720p.

wrong. 1080i has 540 lines of resolution so 720p is above 1080i.

Simple rule of thumb. If the resolution on your TV is 1366x768 it will only natively produce 720P due to only being able to utilize 768 and under. It will take a 1080i resolution and downscale it to 720P. If the TV is 1920x1080 it will natively use 1080P or 1080I depending on content due to 1080 line of vertical resolution.

I may be wrong on this one but 1080i is 540 lines of resolution per field. The odd lines of the image are one field and the even lines another field and those fields comprise a frame. Therefore 1080i is technically 1080 lines of resolution per frame.

There was an experiement that showed 720p looking better than 1080i. I remember the lines looked sharper.

It depends on the TV, so pick whichever looks better to you, but be sure to look at images in motion and not just a freeze frame, since it's possible the image isn't getting deinterlaced correctly in one or both modes.

I'll throw another in and say it depends both on the native resolution of the tv as well as the speed of the motion of whatever you're watching. It you're watching something with a lot of fast paced movement, I would reccomend 720p over 1080i
