Hi gang,
Recently something really annoys the heck out of me. Everytime i load up a Blu-Ray disc into my PS3, some kind of popping noise come out of the home theatre speakers like if it's going through electric shock. It's strange that it only happens when the disc is about to load and when jumping one scene to the next, no popping noise anywhere during a movie. Then i check to see if the noise is still there if i slide in a DVD, and the same thing happens, however this doesn't happen to a CD. What gives this noise? Is it the HDMI cable connection? Is it my home theatre? How can i make the noise stop, it's driving me insane, i mean it's not a big deal to a lot of people, but i want everything to be as perfect as possible. ![]() Thanks! |

I had this issue once before and the problem with my setup was I left the volume too loud on the receiver when I turned it off.
Once i finished watching a movie in surround, i proceeded to turn off my setup without turning the volume down or anything. The very next time I loaded anything, it would crack. Maybe it was just my theatre setup but I think it had some problem with too much noise all at once. Just my guess. Im not AV geek by any means but I would check my cable connections and audio levels... |

I used to have the same issue - I would get a popping or crackling sound when I switched to a HD source (HD-DVD or BD), or when I would un-pause a HD movie. I believe this issue is fairly common with receivers/processors, but I don't believe there is a way to resolve it. It has to do with the signal HD players send through HDMI.
I was able to do a firmware update that fixed the problem, but if you don't have that option, you might be out of luck. I would try calling the manufacture to see if they have any ideas. Just to add - this is very bad on speakers, and you should mute before you get the popping. Last edited by cpgator; 12-26-2007 at 07:33 PM. |

the popping noise youre hearing is the switching between different audio formats...say for instance when your at the menu screen the audio is in Dolby Digital, and then when the movie starts it switches to Uncompressed PCM...the pop occurs when the switch is being made.
Some receivers are very bad at this, and some receivers you never hear it. Im not sure if its a firmware fixable thing or not... |

This was an issue for me when I first got my PS3 in Jan. but the second or third FW update i performed took care of it. Now it only happens on rare occasions, usually if I switch the TV input after I load a game/movie or after a power outtage & reboot scenario.
EDIT: Just for clarity... because my reciever only has HDMI passthrough, my HDMI goes directly from the PS3 to the TV with the optical audio cable to the HTiB. When this was a problem I still heard the popping sound from my TV even when the receiver was off. So, at least in my case, it wasn't the audio switching(but that does happen as well). I bet this noise only comes from loading the Disc, the Laser has to scan the Disc for informations (obviously

Still have it on my Onkyo TX 805. It's got something to do with switching between the audio formats and never happens with games or so. I contacted Onkyo about it and they would see what they could do about it.

Thanks for all the wonderful information guys! I'm gonna contact Samsung about this problem, apparently a firmware update for my receiver and PS3 did not help this problem. I think i might just need a better receiver, my current one is just downright horrendous. Learned my lesson and never going to buy a $100 home theatre ever again even if it was clearance price.
