ps3 vs standalone

Hey I was wondering, what has better picture quality (for movies): ps3 or standalone blu ray player.
No bashing here or creating an uproar but ive heard about how bad the 360s player is and im not saying the ps3 is but I would like to know if a standalone player is better for movies or if the ps3 will play them with completely equal quality. I dont have a bluray player yet and am starting to plan a purchase.
If a standalone player IS better, then by how so and how expensive do you have to go to get better picture?
Also, I believe I read on here that for outputing the sound of movies from the ps3 to a receiver you have to use PCM (?) which means the ps3 decodes it...does this affect the sound that much? I would be using it with an Onkyo 605 receiver...
