Helping a friend, ONKYO 605 & PS3 Settings.

Does anyone have a quick reference to make sure I am connecting this up right.
I am helping a friend get his set up.
So far we have the ps3 set to Bitstream (apperently the ps3 automatically does TrueHD/PCM regardless when it's selected.) But DD & DTS will bitstream. Is this right?
Next up.
What should the receiver be set at? Direct...Neo6, Neutral? Neo6 seems to sound the best.But I am not getting the DD or DTS to light up currently, when those tracks are selected.
Any help would be greatly apprecciated.

I always go Direct myself.

Sounds like you're doing everything right. Experimenting with Bitstream or PCM won't harm anything, either.

What is the difference between Direct and Neo 6? In Neo 6 the DTS logo lights up, but not in the Direct mode. Does this matter?

So, it looks like Neo would be best when watching standard TV since the audio is usually 2 channel. If you are watching an HD channel with a Dolby Digital audio track on Direct mode, would you not hear the DD track?

No, you should still hear the dolby digital track. Its just being done so "with minimal processing"....meaning its not applying Prologic IIx, EX,Neo...etc You are hearing it "directly" like its output.


I guess for your specific question when using for cable, you may want to set it on:

* Dolby Digital+PLIIx Movie: expands 5.1-channel Dolby Digital sources to 7.1-channels

you are correct, even if set to bitstream, the ps3 will force pcm signal for the high definition audio....and bistream signal for standard dolbyd and dts.

Really, I should set my PS3 to bitstream? I did the auto setup and got 1080p and LPCM. Is this not the preferred setting? On the few movies I have watched I have had only Multi Ch PCM light up. Have all my months of reading posts been for naught? Have I sinned in the eyes of the PS3 church by forsaking bitstreaming for LPCM? Tell me why not LPCM and why bitstreaming. I gather it is because of the earlier posting that the PS3 will force LPCM when available even though bitstreaming is the the chosen setting. Dang, why even have a setting if you do not get it? Isn't that like auto? Is auto a setting? Help a man out!

my comments were made from months ago...I have no clue what I was even thinking then.


For Dolby TrueHD on the PS3 set the player to Linear PCM.

Uncompressed PCM tracks default to linear PCM when played so it does not matter if set to bitstream or LPCM.

For Dts-HD it also does not matter if its on bitstream or LPCM.



Again, with the PS3, you have to have it on Linear PCM to hear Dolby TrueHD....everything else can be set to either bitstream or LPCM.

That is the only way his TRUE HD and DTS HD lights will activate on the Onkyo 605!
