Default PS3 & Onkyo 605

I hate asking questions but please indulge me if you will.

I have the PS3 hooked up to the Onkyo 605 via HDMI.

I ran through the PS3 Video Settings and let it do automatic (rather than manual) and it seems to have identified all of the appropriate video options.

When I do the same for the Audio Settings it comes up with only Linear PCM 2 ch. 44.1 kHz & 48 kHz. What happened to DD 5.1, DTS, PCM 5.1, etc? I'm not sure what kHz to pick manually or if I should even make manual selections.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Go into the PS3's audio settings and manually check all the boxes.

I have my ps3 going into my 605 and set automatically it picks all the pcm tracks as well as dd and dts. i'm guessing you tried it again to make sure it was a glitch. is the audio set to bitstream? try switching it to pcm (i think that's the other option). see if that works.

ok, this may be a dumb question, but do you still have audio output still set to optical?? (that may be reason it only goes up to 2.0 pcm)...change to output HDMI.

Settings - Sound Settings - Audio Output Settings - HDMI

disregard if it doesnt apply...just a thought.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm not at home but I'm certain it is set for HDMI & PCM. I did try automatic a couple of time with the same results. I also tried to select all the boxes and the PS3 gave me a warning to the effect of "if this isn't right it could damage your speakers".

I'll play around with it some more tonight and see what happens.

Same as above...I'm having a few different issues myself...

1) I have the PS3 attached via HDMI 1 & I'm able to play movies (BD or otherwise) and CD's just fine. However, I'm unable to play a CD that's encoded DTS-ES 6.1 (Sheryl Crow - Globe Sessions). It only makes a hissing sound when I try to play any track. I know the PS3 dosen't have DTS decoding built in, but I'm able to play BD X-Men which has DTS-MA soundtrack with DTS-ES discrete with no problem. I've tried bitstream and linear PCM options but no results. Any Ideas?

2) (Onkyo 605 related) I have the TV's (1080i Sony WEGA) digiital audio out hooked up to the "Game/TV" in connection but I'm unable to hear TV audio thru it. The connection is assigned to "Game/TV" but no sound when I choose the component.

3) Because the PS3 has on-board TrueHD decoding, shouldn't the 605 show that instead of "Multi-Channel PCM?

Any help from you Onkyo 605 veterans out there is much appreciated. Honestly, I've never had this much trouble hooking up my stereo system before...must be gettin' old.

Many thanks in advance.

No for the ps3 truehd thing. Since it is internally decoding the sound, the display on the onkyo will show multichannel. If and or when (if possible) a firmware is released for the ps3 to pass these sounds bitstreamed, then that is when it'll be able to be displayed on ur receiver, True HD or DTS Master.

as for sheryl crowe, that might be a dvd-audio to which i dont think the ps3 can play??? I may be wrong but i thought ps3 would do sacd thru hdmi. The panasonic blu-ray player does dvd audio though!

and lastly, just double check ur sound settings. who knows, u might come across something that doesnt look right and that would probably fix ur sound issues. Good luck

That certainly would explain a few things. Without the firmware required to upgrade the PS3 to pass DTS-MA & TrueHD, I'm looking at a BD player in the future. My wife's not gonna like that !

Thanks for the info. It eased my mind a bit.

The PS3, using HDMI PCM as audio setting, decodes TrueHD, Dolby Digital and DTS as multichannel PCM before passing it to the receiver. The hissing sound is DTS-encoded PCM coming through. Simply means, the PS3 is not recognizing the PCM data as a DTS-encoded data. You may need to hook up an optical cable to your receiver just to play the CD, or just play it on your other CD/DVD player.

Check your TV's manual. There might be some limitations on the use of this digital output.

As others have said, TrueHD is on-board decoding. Once decoded, it becomes multichannel PCM. Hence the display on your Onkyo.

Thanks Fuad, that helped!

I figured out that the output on my TV needed to be changed in the 605 from HDMI1 to Optical in to get the sound. Can't believe it was that easy . It's an extra step, but it works.

Still scratching my head on the Sheryl Crow CD thing. I can play it in the DVD player however.

Thanks again for your input!

If you select the output as bitstream on the ps3, it should send out the proper dts ES 6.1 stream. I dont think it gets converted to PCM so you just get Hiss.
youll notice if you set the PS3 to bitstream, dolby digital etc now show up on the 605's display (as not being converted to PCM).

So give the bitstream setting a whirl and see what happens.

Its funny because i got stumped on the display showing PCM for Dolby Digital and truHD with the PS3 set to Linear PCM rather than bitstream.

Note that if you selct bitstream out you can no longer choose TruHD, but it seems you can still get PCM 5.1. (further testing required).

Great Amp for the money by the way. I also have a Pioneer AX10is and the little onkyo sounds quite close though lacking in power and clarity.

By the way, when setting up the 605 i was not used to having to have the volume of the amp at around 30 before i could hear anything. Does that sound correct? (my pioneer is lounder at about -45, yes minus)

Yep, keep bitstream set for everything (SDDVD,GAMES,BD) except for playing TrueHD then you change it to LPCM. This is the best way I think because the receiver does the decoding when it can (SDDVD, BD with DTSHD-MA (core DTS)), and PCM tracks (games, BD) are still output as PCM. Just use "triangle" , "AV options", audio options and select LPCM if you have a TrueHD movie.

Default HDMI only offers 2 channels?

Hi all

I too own the sr605 and ps3 and am running into a few HDMI audio issues. I have video media saved on the hard drive that only has stereo channels embedded in the file. my only surround options are multichannel or direct it seems on the receiver using HDMI.

Does this mean i can only play in stereo over HDMI and can't utilize any of Onkyo's signal processing to convert the stereo single into 7.1??

How do i get around this issue? Any tips where I can still use the single HDMI audio pass through?
