Default So I was talking with a friend and had and idea...

I'm not a big fan of sports games (except NHL games), but I was griping about how sports games have not really changed at all over the years. Every franchise is the same each year, but with slightly improved graphics, updated rosters, and new dances in the end zone, maybe if they're feeling creative they'll add one or two new moves.
Sports games started out as just an arcade style game (pick your team, play one game), then you could take a team through a whole season, after that was franchise mode, and now you can play online. Not bad, but I would like to see more. So.....
I propose lifestyle mode. You can create a character, and based on difficulty level, did you make it to the playoffs, how far into the playoffs you went, did you win any awards, or the championship. Maybe they could base it on online play. But depending on how well you did, you get a bonus (or a virtual paycheck) that you can use to buy exclusive stuff for Playstation Home. You know, really nice things to make your virtual apartment look pimped out like your favorite athletes.

Anyhoo, sorry for griping about sports games before getting to the point.

this has already been done in a lot of the 2k games. you get your own pad and you get points for doing certain achievements and you can buy stuff to go in it.

MLB 07: The Show doesn't have an apartment, but you get a virtual paycheck and stuff, integrating it in home would be cool though. Problem is WE GOTTA GET HOME FIRST!

i agree with you 100% though, the sports games are the same every year. what i would really want is instead of a yearly thing, make it a bi or even tri-yearly thing. The big reasoning for having these things yearly in the past is all the transactions that occured from year to year. However, in a time where all consoles have an internet connection, release a great game that you worked on for a few years, if there are roster changes update them via the internet. Work on making the game significantly better and give yourself the time too, release the next installment, that is considerably better and different two or three years later. repeat process. problem is the devs are too greeedy and this wouldn't make them nearly as much $.

I didn't realize this had been done before, it's been a while since I've owned any sports games because I've grown bored with them.
Yeah, I know we've got to get Home first, I wish they'd hurry up with that.

...not a big fan of sports games myself. I own Virtua Tennis and that's been a lot of fun, but I think a lot of that has to deal with the fact that it looks amazing on the PS3 and I'm a tennis player myself.

I tried the new hockey games but couldn't get into them, the last one I played was NHL98, ha...which was so much fun, but I guess the game mechanics and controls have changed since then. I think I'll give NHL2k8 another chance though since it's supposed to have classic controls

Boxing and basketball have evolved fairly well.

Baseball is the worst of the bunch for lack of innovation. I honestly have a tough time believing that 25 years have passed since Hardball was on the Commodore 64 and the best we can get is the BIGS by 2K.

Madden and NHL 200? by Electronic Arts are just horrendously slow at graphical change (glacial pace comes to mind).

Photo-realism should be a reality and the best we get are jagged faces and limbs that look like they are straight out of a pop-up book.

AS someone said before, Sega did this with the 2K series . . . plus, the NFL game was FAR FAR better than Madden. Since Madden has become the only NFL game available, I have yet to play an NFL game since.

They have done that...sort of. The Madden franchise did it where you can lock on a player and get a close, third-person view of the field (no, it's not quite looking through the face-mask, but it's close).

EA's done a good job on some of their titles re-defining the controls to make them feel more "real". NHL 08, for example, features a system where you use the two analog sticks to do almost all of your skating and shooting. Left analog is your body, right analog is your stick. It has a very intuitive feel to it.

It did. It was called First Person Football. I never could get any offense working that way, but it was great fun playing linebacker or end.

MLB needs a realistic touch, like a trainer shooting a needle into the players to bulk them up. Then having fools like Barry Bonds say I never willing took any steroids.

That would make MLB look really look realistic.

I have a lot of respect for Pete Rose. He didn't deny betting on Reds games, he only denied betting against the Reds. Anyway, he was one of the greatest hitters in the history of baseball, and should be allowed in the hall of fame.

I agree, nothing that happens off the field should affect hall of fame status, was just joking (and had one too many tonight :{

Pete Rose lied and denied for years that he never bet on baseball, period. Only until very recently he admitted betting because he thought it might help him get into the Hall of Fame. Yes, he was one of the greatest players of all time, but I prefer to admire other players of that era like George Brett, Carew, etc. The Hall of Fame is more than just about numbers or performance. Pete Rose knew the rules but was arrogant enough to think he's above them. In addition, I can't believe he was a manager and player at the same time. He had no business playing a lot of those games as a manager because he was clearly finished, but again his arrogance shined through. Also, it is no coincidence the Reds would go on to win the World Series in 1990 after Rose left the team. The Reds were the best team in that division during many of those years he managed, yet he couldn't get them into the post season.
