New Line Cinema Magnolia (1999)

“An audacious, hilarious, deeply affecting tapestry…I wish I could give it
more than four stars.” -- New York Post, Lou Lumenick

MAGNOLIA

The Critically-Acclaimed Film from Writer-Director Paul Thomas Anderson

Debuts on Blu-ray Hi-Def January 19 from Warner Home Video

Burbank, Calif., September 21, 2009 – Magnolia, one of writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson’s (There Will be Blood) most accomplished and talked-about early films, will be available January 19 for the first time on Blu-ray. With six times higher resolution than standard DVD, along with the sonic excellence of Dolby TruHD, viewers are thrown into the emotionally charged scenes of this film as never before.

Anderson received an Oscar® nomination for his original screenplay - a bold, epic drama that follows seemingly unrelated people on a single day. Magnolia features high-voltage names like Tom Cruise, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman, William Macy, and John Reilly. Another star-studded acclaimed film from Anderson -- Boogie Nights -- will also be released soon to Blu-ray and is expected to follow in early 2010. Magnolia will sell for $28.99 SRP each. Orders are due December 15, 2009.

About The Film

Anderson’s follow up to Boogie Nights was called “one of the best movies of the year” by Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers and was nominated for three Academy Awards®-- Best Supporting Actor (Tom Cruise in an amazing performance as a sleazy infomercial host); Best Original Song (Save Me by Aimee Mann) and an Original Screenplay nomination for Anderson. The film takes place in a single day in Los Angeles, focusing on a number of interconnected people whose lives are forever changed as they search for love and meaning in a chaotic world. The film chronicles such diverse occurrences as a suicide turned homicide by a quirk of timing; a motivational speaker motivated by rage; and a quiz kid rendered stupid by a lightning strike. Besides Cruise, look for more great acting from Philip Seymour Hoffman, William H. Macy, Jason Robards, Philip Baker Hall and Julianne Moore.

Special Features:

Magnolia Video Diary -- Covers the blossoming of a modern-day masterwork
Frank T.J. Mackey Seminar
Seduce and Destroy Infomercial
One and Save Me -- Aimee Mann music videos
Theatrical trailers and TV spots

Magnolia Blu-ray

Street Date: January 19, 2010

Order Due Date: December 15, 2009

Run Time: 188 Minutes

Rated R

$28.99 SRP

also I hope since this is a New Line title that it hasn't been handed over to WB's even though they own the film now... in a DNR HD transfer. We all know New Line has DNRrd some major title like Pan's Labyrinth, and Dark City.

I hope PTA and Robert Elswit approve the transfer.
Yep, considering New Line's rather chequered history we can only hope that PTA and/or RE have had some involvement with the transfer.

PTA rules but I don't have my hopes up for this blu-ray. New Line? Warner? 90s movie? recipe for disaster if i've ever heard one

Even TWBB looks a bit suspect and it's brand new. I read that all the exteriors were shot on kodak's lowest speed film with full frame anamorphic optics, so why the hell is it so grainy

Looks like all the DVD extras are being carried over. I can't remember if there was a "One" video on the DVD though. I'll have to check it when I get home.

Please don't mess this up with DNR or EE!!! And give us Boogie Nights while you're at it.

I'm glad to see Magnolia getting a Blu-ray release in January. It really seems the floodgates are beginning to open for Blu-ray with so many titles getting released worldwide, I think 2010 is going to be a monster year for the format. Blu-ray is going to dominate the market for a very very very long time. Getting back to Magnolia, hopefully Paul Thomas Anderson is involved with this Blu-ray release.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. While 2010 is likely to be a very good year for blu-ray, it still accounts for only 10% of all home video sales.

It's no where near "domination" levels, yet...

At this point next year I suspect Blu-ray will be shooting up the charts in home video sales, and its domination will begin. Luckily for us the days for DVD are numbered, and we'll have Blu-ray to watch for a long, long, long time. It's a good thing.

I was hoping for a PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE announcement for the US since it is already out in England on BD. I also want Boogie Nights... maybe they will be finalized soon for release around the same time.

Excellent, this is one of my more anticipated titles. I never really collected movies until BD; DVD just didn't seem good enough to get me excited, however Magnolia was one of the few titles I had to pick up. So, double dip here I come, and I'm really happy to do it for such a great film.

Awesome news. Tom Cruise's best performance. Say what you want about the man now, but he was phenomenal in that movie.

I'm wondering whether 'Magnolia' will be packaged as a digibook. As far as I know, the New Line titles haven't been packaged that way thus far, but if it's coming out under Warner's own label, is it likely to be done as a digibook?

I doubt it or it would come with a retail price around 34.98 but that is me following past retail pricing on digibooks from WBs
