USA The Hurt Locker Blu-ray January 12, 2010 - Wins Best Picture Oscar

Quote:
In the summer of 2004, Sergeant J.T. Sanborn and Specialist Owen Eldridge of Bravo Company are at the volatile center of the war, part of a small counterforce specifically trained to handle the homemade bombs, or Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), that account for more than half of U.S. hostile deaths and have killed thousands of Iraqis. A high-pressure, high-stakes assignment, the job leaves no room for mistakes, as they learn when they lose their team leader on a mission. When Staff Sergeant William James takes over the team, Sanborn and Eldridge are shocked by what seems like his reckless disregard for military protocol and basic safety measures. And yet, in the fog of war, appearances are never reliable for long. Is James really a swaggering cowboy who lives for peak experiences and the moments when the margin of error is zero - or is he a consummate professional who has honed his esoteric craft to high-wire precision? As the fiery chaos of Baghdad swirls around them, the men struggle to understand and contain their new leader long enough for them to make it home. They have only 38 days left in their tour of Iraq, but with each new mission comes another deadly encounter, and as James blurs the line between bravery and bravado, it seems only a matter of time before disaster will strike.

Worth a blind buy?

I did see it in theaters. Its another film portrayal of life in the military, like Jarhead, Full Metal Jacket, only more realistic and down to earth. The story revolves around a EOD team deployed to Iraq. The tension built around the bomb disarming scenes is well paced.

So far, The Hurt Locker is the best-reviewed film of the year and one of the best-reviewed films of the decade.

Take that for what you will.

That doesn't seem to be the opinion of the military. Don't get me wrong, it's a great film, but any serviceman who's seen it will tell you how exaggerated it is.

Jeremy Renner's performance in this movie was outstanding. I really liked the way the film played out including the ending.

I can't recommend this as a blind buy because, as a cheapskate, I don't believe in buying a movie you haven't seen. It's a good movie. There were some elements in it that bothered me, but nothing too distracting. If you like war movies and you have a lot of money laying around then grab it. Otherwise I recommend a rental before you purchase.

Australia Any news on a Region B encoding for HL ;(

I am getting peeved at this region encoding on BR - I know why its there - just annoys me to see films I want released in regions that I cant watch.

Hopefully this will be in Region B soon!

WOW! One of the very few times where here in the UK we are getting it first. Lionsgate are releasing it on the 28th December. I think we are in pretty safe hands with Lionsgate.
