Troy Blu-ray Review

I just bought Troy on BD and for the most part found that i liked the original release better than the DC. There is a nude seen and thats about it, tho it was well worth it. It left out some good music and added in this annoying woman yelling for three minutes. Picture looks great and i still love this movie but the woman yelling at the funerals they could have kept out.

lol they picked by far the worst track out of both scores and put it in the movie. They also replaced the only Horner music from the movie I liked in the climax of the film for some reason... Personally I would've rather had Gabriel Yared's score instead of James Horner's annoyingly typical noise.

But there's more than just a nude scene added, they fleshed out some characters too.

Default I just watched Troy Directors Cut on Blu-ray...

I've never seen the theatrical and I've heard it's pretty horrid, but man the directors cut was incredible. Anyone who hasn't picked this up (and it is on the current Amazon B2G1 offer ) shouldn't waste any more time not owning it. PQ and AQ were phenomenal, in addition to a ginormous amount of special features. Highly recommend!

Might get this one down the road. I didn't really give it a chance when I first saw it so who knows what'll happen this time around.

I also only saw it in the theater. I can't imagine that adding anything to what I saw in the theater would somehow make it bearable to sit through again.

my guess is if you've already seen the theatrical you'll probably still have a bad taste in your mouth and won't be able to enjoy the directors AS much (but will probably like it better to some degree). however, for people who haven't seen either, i'd highly recommend skipping over the theatrical all together and just going with the directors for a first time viewing.

now im kind of interested to see the theatrical to find out for myself just what went wrong.

Yes, the director's cut isn't really much different.
It does not add or take away any value to the film.

That said.
This is a must own.
It is just incredible on blu.

I love Troy: The Director's Cut. It's superior in every way to my DVD version of the theatrical release.

The PQ was totally pristine and clear. Color was amazing.. especially since this film has a lot of it. A lot of tans with oranges and blues (Trojan costumes and the bodies of water). I loved watching this in hi-def.

Sound is great.. uncompressed PCM.

The movie itself is good. I love the fight sequences.. watching Pitt move was amazing. Achilles is the highlight of the film and watching how he fights is a real treat. He simply cannot die! In one scene, he slays around 20 men.. and it's believable as you watch how he fights.

As for the movie itself I would've liked Wolfgang to be more parallel with the novel as I hate it when Hollywood directors stray from the source material for a audience-friendly "popcorn" atmosphere. Some stuff is true to the novel but some of it is made up and it doesn't make sense. For example, how does Paris know to shoot Achilles in his heel?! And of course, Agamemnon had to die in Troy because we as the audience need to know there was some justice, but alas, there was none. Troy fell.. and babies were being thrown off the walls (including Hector's infant son) and women were raped - which was seen briefly in the Director's Cut.

If this was more like the actual story of the fall of Troy, it would be one of my favorite movies. It's very flawed (story-wise) but very beautiful, and worth having in any collection.

I know some hate it, but I think Troy is great. I love the time period, too, so that helps (I really enjoyed HBO's Rome). I don't even remember what was added for the DC, even though I watched both versions.

completely agree with your latter statements (obviously, thus the point of the thread ), but i think the former are your own opinion. granted i havent seen the theatrical so i dont know how much different it truly is, but ive talked to people who claim the directors is vastly different and is much more in depth. i think the degree of difference is in the eye of the beholder. some find it almost the exact same, some see a completely different movie.

if you were going to partake in the B2G1 and need a 3rd movie, i don't think you'll be making a mistake with troy. i didn't think it was AS great as gladiator, but definitely a spectacle and something i'd watch again. and the action is phenomenal

Found this, regarding the changes made for the DC:

I was going to copy & paste, but it turned out to be pretty long, so here's the link - it looks like a lot of changes were made from this: http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/30134...directors-cut/
