By announcing and making the price cuts effective January 13th, Toshiba just screwed all the retailers that sold HD DUD players in December:
During the Xmas season, people are allowed to "exchange" or "return" or "price protect" purchases for up to 30 days after Xmas day (January 24th). How much money are retailers going to lose from price protetions and/or returns/re-purchase (if they re-purchase ![]() ![]() Toshiba just screwed all the retailers because they could'nt keep it in their pants for 10 more days. I wonder how many more HD DUD players those same retailers are going to order from Toshiba... knowing the next price cuts are only a few months away and considering their inventory is overflowing with open-box HD DUD players as it is ![]() ![]() Buy Buy HD DUD ![]() P.S. Costco allows for 90 day returns... they are now selling the DUD player for 129$... the customer service clerks over there must be going nuts ![]() Last edited by unreal1080p; 01-15-2008 at 05:34 AM. |

Most likly, such protections just will shift the sale date to a later point. And whatever arrangement they have with the hardware vendor to handle downward price adjustments in MSRP will account for the difference.
However, it does foster alot of ill will with retailers and consumers. |

I agree, it doesn't make much sense to do it so soon after Christmas unless someone was paying attention {like us} and see that Toshiba just got their asses kicked.

Best Buy Holiday Return Policy: -As stated on the Receipt - "Gift purchases made NOV 1st - Dec 24th, 2007 Qaulify for the extended return period the last day for returns and exchanges under the extended return and exchange period is Jan 31st, 2008. The regular return and exchange policy resumes for purchases made on and after Dec 26th, 2007" I think we should go to all the DUD forums and make sure they know about getting their refunds. The more this happens the quicker the retailers are going to be out of the DUD business ![]() |

Actually having worked in retail management and district management, I know that vendors will offer price protection to the retail stores. So say if X product drops $10, they will issue a credit for all affected units in that companies inventory. Also, if its an issue of a price drop and they do a return/repurchase at the newer price, they can apply that info to the vendor and they will issue them a credit. Its not the retailers who lose any money on this, its Toshiba. They will be issuing credit to the retailers for X number of dollars on X number of units that are returned/repurchased.

Surprisingly, I've never worked a day in my life (40 yo) in retail.
It is just basic economic/business understanding. A retail store would never hurt their own bottom line by eating an expense created by a mfg. price structure. It is so basic it astounds me that I have to spend any time discussing it. |

1) Customer service departments wasting time refunding customers 2) Whenever a customer sets foot back in a store for things of this nature, it's an opportunity for them to change their minds completely: How many are going to simply return the player rather then collect the price difference? You're going to tell me that the retailers don't lose money when this happens? 3) The costs of generating accurate price protection reports (which probably won't be accurate) 4) The costs of claiming the rebates/money back from Toshiba: Disputes of this nature between vendors and retailers are common place and often result in retailers refusing to pay manufacturers on a timely basis until said disputes are settled which leads to manufacturers not sending any more inventory until the overdue bills are paid... it's quite a vicious circle and a costly one at that. 5) The costs of Toshiba denying a certain percentage of those claims because of "technicalities" 6) The costs of the retailer getting his money back 6 months or more later then they actually refunded the customer's money. 7) The customer satisfaction cost of the angry customer having to claim his refund --> The customer feeling that if he was'nt paying attention, the retailer would have gotten away with screwing him out of his hard earned money and charging him too much to begin with (customers are not going to blame the manufacturer for this... they will blame the retailer). Price cuts like this cost retailers plenty. Only the blind chooses not to see the hidden costs of such drastic price cuts... especially when they happen a few weeks after Xmas. These are not Xmas decorations we are talking about... those are expected to go down in price 50% after Xmas. Last edited by unreal1080p; 01-15-2008 at 07:00 PM. |

Don't be extreme about things. Every patron that steps foot back in the store for a refund or price protection refund is also highly likely to pick up some new purchases from the store. Thus evening the table. |

That's the other side of the medal... but I have to tell you, personally, EVERY time I walked in a store for a price protection, I left the store with cash...not new merchandise. I buy what I need because I need it... not because I have money to buy it. If I have more money and no new need, then the money goes in my pocket.

No matter how much money I have I will not "browse" to find an excuse to spend money. I do my browsing/research on the internet and then if/when I decide I want/need something, I buy it. Simple enough. Retailers should thank God for customers like you... the ones that browse to look for an excuse to spend money. |
