Default Higher bitrates on future Warner releases?

Now that Warner is Blu, are they going to use better codecs now, since they don't have to dumb down for the HD-DVD release?

They better.

I'm hoping they re-encode Batman Begins and the Matrix Trilogy instead of just giving us the HD DVD version on a BRD.

I wouldn't expect a different encode for all movies that haven't been released on Blu-ray yet. They will most likely port them over.

I would hope they would use high bitrate VC-1 or AVC.

No matter what, I'm sure that new titles entering the production pipleline will be optimized for Blu starting with the June or so releases

Hopefully earlier, in time for Twister.

actually, batman begins is one of the best releases of any title by either side of the war, and the matrixes look sensational as well. just cuz it's hd dvd doesn't mean it looked bad ...however look for probably better audio on the discs (hopefully)...

cant wait to get blu instead of these maroon versions ha i was really starting to get pissed at those sweet matrix cases being spoiled by by maroon splotchy plastic

I hope they start using AVC with 7.1 DTS HD Master Audio just like their New Line branch... and same goes for HBO.

I'd like that if the PS3 would finally decode it and send it as PCM. If not, TrueHD/PCM is fine.

I think the best we can hope for is ported video with upgraded audio tracks. I highly doubt they would spend the money and time to re-encode titles like The Matrix and Batman Begins. But I suppose we can always hope

The codec's not the problem....VC-1 is fine, at high bitrates. And pretty much all of Warner's releases are VC-1. Problem is, they rarely get above 20mbps.

Don't get me wrong...AVC is pretty much always better for film, but we can't blame VC-1 for the not-so-astonishing encodes Warner has done so far...

Completely agree. I dont mind if they continue to release with VC-1 encodes as long as they are on par with films like Rush Hour 3 and Shoot'em Up which, correct me if im wrong, are both done in VC-1 and they both look amazing. I'm not worried about WB/New Line anymore. Thier films will speak for themselves now that they are exclusive

Can someone in layman's term explain what exactly are codec's and which are used (& better)?

Thanks!

I have a feeling that Batman Begins and the Matrix will be re-encoded, maybe not with AVC but i think they will re-encode with VC-1 with a higher bitrate. Just my opinion, but we will see when they are announced. Remember, they had a new encode for full metal jacket when they re-released it. So i have faith in WB now.

The majority of movies released on blu is in MPEG4-AVC or VC-1. AVC is in my opinion the best encode out there especially if it is with a high bitrate.

Codec is short for Compression/Decompression (the same way modem is short for modulator/demodulator). It's a term used to describe an algorithm that performs both processes on digital media. In other words, it's a way of shrinking a large amount of data into a smaller space than would normally be required on a disc, and then expanding it to its original state when it's played.

VC-1 (or Video Codec 1) is an advanced version of Microsoft's WMV (Windows Media Video) codec.

AVC (or Advanced Video Coding) is the "competing" codec for HD media. AVC is part of the MPEG-4 video/audio standard, developed by the Motion Picture Experts Group.

As to which one is better, that's really in the eye of the beholder. I personally prefer AVC because it has a more "filmic" look about it. I find VC-1 looks a bit too much like video.

Agreed, watch the prestige last night on blu. and despite it being a port and never going over 20mbp the PQ was stunning.

Which is strange because The Last Samuri was a about 20-25 and hitting 30 in some places but was dissapointed with the PQ. seemed a bit soft for such a recent movie. They did cram it with extras, so i think if the moved it to a second disc the film itself would have looked better

robgmun, this bitrate obsession has got to stop. Though many (especially here) will never believe it, the overall image you see (which influences your perception of movie picture quality) has more to do with the movie master supplied to the compressionist than the specific codec or the average/peak bitrates.

And some movies really aren't intended to look like Crank or pure CGI like Cars.
