Default BDP-S300 pq grain HELP?

hello i'm new here, ive been reading these boards fer months but i just joined. i am by no means new to this format or to home a/v equipment setup but i do have a question. ive got a bdp-s300 hooked up direct hdmi to my samsung 4042h and the pq is almost perfect except for one thing there is a level of grain to the picture. i know its not the tv because i had a ps3 hooked up before and the picture was perfect no grain what so ever on the same movies i'm playing now (ex- spiderman 123, diehard, bladerunner, simpsons etc.) so i know its the player but i was wondering if there are some tweaks or adjustments i could make to reduce the grain. or is this just common and should i just buy another player?

Blade Runner has grain, it is an element of the film. I've seen it played on a PS3 and it does have grain. Are you sure you just have not noticed it before? Quite a few movies will have grain, since the higher resolution can resolve it.

At any rate, was your PS3 hooked up via HDMI, or component?

It sounds like the bdp-s300 is giving you a better picture and allowing you to see detail that you couldn't see before. Just one thing worth checking, though, is does it have any settings that could be exaggerating the grain, such as settings for sharpness that could make it look "extra grainy" if set high?

Very true, make sure that the only variable here is the player. Make sure when you switch players the video input and TV settings are identical.

turn down the "sharpness" setting on your TV.

Hi! I'm new here as well and looking for answers to my grain problems.
Currently I'm using a Samsung 65 inch 1080p DLP, and a PS3 connected via HDMI.
I've noticed grain in Casino Royale, Planet Earth, and Lost season 3.
What it looks like when this happens in almost like a strobe effect behind the screen. I see small dots of white for however long a particular scene lasts. It always happens on the same scene in the same movies. The only thing I can think of is that they are filmed with a different camera type or different settings.

The one time I know this happens on is during Casino Royale after the initial chase scene. When James Bond is holding the guy he was chasing at gunpoint inside the embassy when he is surrounded by the soldiers. During the dialogue when the camera is back and forth between James and the other guy is when it happens. It goes from great looking on the other guy, to grainy on james, then back to great on other guy, and crappy on james. It switches two-three times in the scene and only looks grainy from that one shot. I think it looks this way later as well, but I'm not sure when.

I also see this during 300 (not the normal grain of the film) but in darker scenes like when they are around the fire the black portions all flash white in certain spots. Its almost as if it doesn't know wether or not its supposed to be black, or if it isn't handling the low light situation correctly. Sorry if this isn't in the correct spot or isn't applicable to the other problem mentioned in this thread. Any help is appreciated.

If I remember correctly, that intercutted shot was grainier (different film stocks, daylight shooting conditions, maybe it was zoomed in to make it a different plane, etc,) than the shots surrounding it.

As somebody posted earlier, check your settinsg, speciallty sharpness. Increasing sharpnes after a point doesn't realy increase detail (it has then reached the black and white limits of the display) but it keeps boosting low amplitude "detail" (be it grain or noise) upwards till it makes it too visible instead of a backgrounsd thing.

as usual my already too used grain linkis:

Doing a Search for the word grain in thread titles yields several threads.

Here are the most recent:

Grain... How to deal with Grain...

Film Grain

I now see film grain

2001, Close Encounters, Pirates - Film Grain

Poll Would you prefer 300 with or without grain?

The "300 is grainy!!" thread

I have heard of people with the ps3 and this problem. Changing the output from 24fps to 60 or the other way around (I can't remember) works for most.

Thanks for the advice. I keep meaning to check the specific TV model. I know it was the 2006 model that they were pushing pretty big last year. I'll adjust settings and so on and see if it can't get it right. Do you know where that 24-60 setting was located?
